Audience Member For the time this movie was made it was groundbreaking but it sadly does not hold up well. It's worth seeing if you are a hard-core silent film fan. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/30/22 Full Review William L Significant in its feminine perspective for the time but simplistic in most other ways, including narrative, theme, and production value, The Smiling Madame Beudet is more of an academic work than a piece of great film. Häxan, for instance, predates this film by several years and introduces a far more nuanced interpretation of women combined with a far superior technical framework. Valuable as an artifact, but doesn't feature much else to encourage viewers in the modern day. (3/5) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/21 Full Review s r 1001 movies to see before you die. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Great work from an early on feminist. And the depressing ending still manages to be relevant for a considerable amount of modern women. I should be better known. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the most insightful films I've seen to depict how forlorn an unloved married woman can become. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Unless you're French, the Smiling Madame Beudet will probably go straight over your head. Apart from a few nice little editing techniques, I can't say I was impressed at all. Knowing the plot prior to viewing at least gave me a chance to work out what was actually going on. Still, the majority of the time was spent showing the characters speaking with hardly any dialogue boxes at all. Those that did appear had no English translation on this version. As it is during the silent movie era it is meant to tell the story through the actions of the characters. Unfortunately, shots of them talking is not exactly going to make an interesting story. Now, if you was French and was able read the text then you would probably enjoy but for me, it was just 30-odd minutes of watching people mouthing words, which I didn't enjoy at all. Jules Caldeira Film Inquiry Madame Beudet is widely considered to be one of the earliest feminist films and while Madame may never smile, I certainly did. Mar 4, 2023 Full Review John Beaufort Christian Science Monitor The symbolism is clear and effective despite crudities of execution, and the acting is always compelling.
