Nick F The Texas Rangers is an interesting 1952 Western with an unusual storyline written by Frank Gruber, a noted pulp fiction author. George Montgomery turns in his usual reliable performance as an outlaw released early from prison on condition he helps the newly-formed Texas Rangers capture his old gang. The gang is lead by Sam Bass, played by William Bishop, and includes a lesser role for Jock Mahoney who ten years later would be starring in three Tarzan movies. Set in Texas but filmed in Southern California, this film holds the attention thanks to a strong plot, and was ably directed by Phil Karlson who neatly maintained a good mix of action and gunplay - which is exactly what Western fans want.
