A taut genre exercise in fear and tension, The Deep Dark in its best moments leaves us as breathless as it does its motley collection of desperate, trapped miners. Go to Full Review

Mathieu Turi’s period horror film is a lean, mean creature feature that manages to evoke a wide range of Francophone frights, including claustrophobic suspense and dread, buckets of gore, and plenty of cosmic terrors for knowing fans of weird tales. Go to Full Review

Alain Duplantier shows a crystalline contrast between illuminated characters, darkness, and shadow, which ensures that you see only what you have to see. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It’s in [its] understanding of working life that the film really excels, and it’s refreshing to see working class characters given centre stage in a story like this. Go to Full Review

The Deep Dark is a must-watch for fans of practical effects and nightmarish monsters as the creature is a stunningly realised bloodthirsty beast. Go to Full Review

A low budget keeps its ambition from tipping over into greatness, but it still delivers chills and a solid creature feature down in the dark. Go to Full Review

R T @SnovieMob 5d 100% from 10 geeks who are impressed by hands puppets in cardboard theater. This movie borders on terrible. What could have been an interesting premise was scrapped for cliches and a convoluted plot. They gave away to much to early and then when the big reveal happened they showed too much and the creature looked like a puppet. Twas My bloody Valentine meets raiders of the Lost Arc. I don't recommend at all. See more Glenn G. @Alfatango1 Jun 27 A great cast of characters. From the greedy to the honest with a horrifying creature and a story set in a place where you wouldn't want to be in the best of times. See more Sam P @laniakea May 11 Shot on location in the real coal mines of northern France, Mathieu Turi's horror is genuinely oppressive. Narrow tunnels, crushing darkness, walls closing in. The 1950s setting adds real weight, and the cast deliver naturalistic performances that make you care about these men long before the horror arrives. Which makes the creature such a bitter disappointment. Moknorot was built by Japanese sculptor Yoneyama Keisuke and the craftsmanship is impressive, but a well-made puppet is still a puppet. Once it lumbers out of the shadows and plants its insect face centre screen, the tension evaporates. It needed to stay in the dark. A near-masterpiece undone by its own rubbery monster. God forgive me but why have you given freedom to this direction and story. My eyes are burning See more Erik C @RT54061067 Apr 8 Lately Ive been consumed with the thought that they just don't make good creature features anymore like they used to. Then i saw this movie and truly felt hopeful for the future of horror. It’s a must see movie, its a french film so there will he subtitles but the emotions and fear of the characters truly come through. They should make a sequel film, youll understand after watching it.
