Kristen Lopez Culturess The Edge of Seventeen is compared to the work of John Hughes, because it's destined to be a classic teens will look to for solace. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Anne Cohen Refinery29 Every decade has its cult teen movie. Thirty-two years ago, it was Sixteen Candles. For the '90s, it was Clueless. The early aughts had Mean Girls. Now we have The Edge of Seventeen. Jun 27, 2017 Full Review David Stratton The Australian The Edge of Seventeen, the feature debut from writer Kelly Fremon Craig, stands out above the countless other teenage movies from recent years by virtue of its honesty and realism. Outside of some tonal inconsistencies with the Erwin (Hayden Szeto) character, there’s not much to dislike about The Edge of Seventeen. Rated: A Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) What’s so wonderful about this film is that Craig explores all of Nadine’s flaws, insecurities, naiveté, and particularly her self-loathing. In doing so she paints a fully-fleshed out portrait of teen girldom in flux. Mason M I would say that I'm a connoisseur of coming of age comedy drama films, it's one of my favorite genres. And The Edge of Seventeen was a riveting, creative, and hilarious watch. Though it was a bit darker than I expected, I still really enjoyed this film. The writing and plot was a great balance between realism where there isn't really that much of an actual plot, yet enough cohesion for me to still be riveted and immersed in the plot. The writing comedically was also just as good, everything the Woody Harrelson character said had me bursting out with laughter. Hailee Steinfeld's performance was also really impressive as one of the better teenage performances I've seen in a coming of age film. And I won't spoil it, but the ending was one of the most satisfying endings to a film I've seen in a long time. To anyone who enjoys the coming of age comedy drama, The Edge of Seventeen is an immersive, immensely well made, and hilarious film that really left me smiling by the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Nim T I liked the movie where Hailee Steinfield captured the essence of being a teenager. Whether it is the struggle after the father's death, the lost of her friend and a estranged relationship, she showed with the right amount of emotion and action. Woody Harrelson was a good supporting character for Steinfield because he was showing with calmness, yet honesty that he cares for the student as a teacher. The chemistry Steinfield have with the other characters was clear and filled with natural emotions. The way friends' relationships can get impacted easily is another real life event that is worth acknowledging. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Ed R Incredibly depressing depiction of a teenagers life. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Laurian D A wonderful movie. One of the rare gems that never derails. Charm, wit, humor, emotion, all of it delivered by a very likeable cast. No matter how young or old you are, you will enjoy this one a lot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review charlotte t an incredible perspective on grief, trials and self-loathing turned into acceptance. This movie takes a refreshing look at a teenage girl who has struggled relentlessly and let those struggles form her view of the world, resulting in solace. each character, including Nadine's mum, has wonderful depth and I thought that Edwin's awkwardness was perfect for that of Nadine. great casting, great storyline and a lovely watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Jey D All the John Hughes comparisons are 100% apt. Hailee Steinfeld is sensational, she deserved an Oscar nomination. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
