Jeff M Holy cow! I had heard this was a good movie, but this was above and beyond my wildest expectations - potentially one of the best coming of age movies I've ever seen. What an awesome surprise! Steinfeld's Nadine is one of the most complex and realistic cinematic teenagers you're likely to see - exasperating, sarcastic and irritating while simultaneously vulnerable and relatable. It's a miraculous performance, and both she and Harrelson as a teacher cut from the same cloth deserved awards attention. It's an 80s John Hughes movie with a 2010s sensibility - and along with LADY BIRD is among the great young adult movies of recent memory. One could argue the ending loses a bit of its edge, but this is a very, very minor complaint that doesn't affect the overall quality in the slightest! Watch this one with your favorite teenager! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Alec B Intensely enjoyable. Nice to know that Hailee Steinfeld 's terrific turn in the 2010 "True Grit" wasn't a fluke. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review matthias s "The Edge of Seventeen" is a rollercoaster of teenage emotions that had me reminiscing about my own tumultuous adolescence. The film boasts great acting and spot-on casting, especially from Hailee Steinfeld, who effortlessly captures the awkward charm of a 17-year-old navigating the tricky waters of high school. Her portrayal is relatable on so many levels, making it feel like she's channeling my own teenage self. The story is a mix of charming, funny, and emotional moments that hit close to home. Like the protagonist, I, too, felt the pangs of loneliness and bullying during those awkward years. The added twist of her best friend falling for her sibling adds a unique layer of drama, and the interactions between the characters are both authentic and hilarious. "The Edge of Seventeen" transported me back to a part of my life I didn't necessarily want to revisit, but it did so with wit and heart, making it a worthwhile watch despite a few minor flaws. It's a 3.5-star trip down memory lane that will resonate with anyone who's survived the trials and tribulations of being seventeen. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Steve C "two types of people in life: those who excel in life and those who die in a huge explosion" ....? So rich people and suicide bombers? Anyways, so to have a Chinese in an American movie, Chinese people need to partly finance it too ... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/23 Full Review Sebastian S In a few hours I turn 18, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little scared. Scared of the future and what lies ahead. For the last week I've been watching films that remind me of childhood like The Last Crusade, and Prince of Egypt as like a final goodbye to my childhood. But unlike the other films that have a child like wonder to them, this does not. Why did I choose this to be my last film, its bleak and depressing. I chose it because it reminds me of now, I relate to Nadine more than any other character I've seen recently. I know what it's like to have your friends leave you, I know what it's like to be faced with impossible decisions that could ruin relationships. The last few months have been some of the hardest for me. I had to move away from my home and family. I had to leave all my friends just when things were starting to go my way. And it really has taken a toll on my mental health. And had to do my senior year 1,300 miles from home. Whereas Indy and Henery Jones relationship reminds me a lot of my own with my dad, this reminds me of my relationship with my mother. A bitter love-hate relationship that has really affected the people around us. And that's one of the things I really relate to in this film, how your relationship affects those close to you. But despite all the hardships and loneliness I still believe there is hope. That there's still some light at the end of the tunnel. That is another reason why I chose this film. It ends on a note of hope, that eventually things will be good, and I do believe this. That new possibilities await us all. To not give up hope even when life throws you down. It may not be today may not be tomorrow, but soon I believe we will all walk into that light, and everything will be just OK. 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Aaron S This movie is almost hypnotic at times. While it isn't excessively "real" feeling, the emotions it evokes are about as real as it comes from every angle. Basically every character is perfectly realized. Despite Nadine (Steinfeld) being the focal point, all the characters' struggles are recognized equally and given credence. It's so charming, tows the line of being weighty and light just right, and is consistently so enjoyable that it begs to be watched over again. Kristen Lopez Culturess The Edge of Seventeen is compared to the work of John Hughes, because it's destined to be a classic teens will look to for solace. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Anne Cohen Refinery29 Every decade has its cult teen movie. Thirty-two years ago, it was Sixteen Candles. For the '90s, it was Clueless. The early aughts had Mean Girls. Now we have The Edge of Seventeen. Jun 27, 2017 Full Review David Stratton The Australian The Edge of Seventeen, the feature debut from writer Kelly Fremon Craig, stands out above the countless other teenage movies from recent years by virtue of its honesty and realism. Rated: 4/5 Jan 13, 2017 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) What’s so wonderful about this film is that Craig explores all of Nadine’s flaws, insecurities, naiveté, and particularly her self-loathing. In doing so she paints a fully-fleshed out portrait of teen girldom in flux. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast A challenging and confronting view of teendom, anchored by an astounding performance by Hailee Steinfeld. The trick is to view the film from Nadine's dark, cynical, depressed perspective.
