Critics Consensus

The Happytime Murders wastes its intriguingly transgressive premise on a witless comedy that blindly pushes buttons instead of attempting to tell an entertaining story.

The film is basically a string of variations on the not-that-funny joke of cute puppets saying and doing naughty things. Go to Full Review

With multiple scenes of drug-snorting and depraved puppet sex, including an admittedly hilariously drawn-out ejaculation scene...it's worth emphasising that this is definitely not one for the kiddies. Go to Full Review

It leaves you with nothing to think about, and too many of the jokes fall short, with the genuinely funny ones being few and far between. Go to Full Review

You know when someone constantly swears just for the sake of swearing? That's shock value. The Happytime Murders is all shock, very little value. Go to Full Review

08/22/2021 A totally twisted but absolutely hilarious movie! See more Karyn E @KarynLikesMovies Dec 22 I put off watching this film for a long time, thinking the writing would be bad. But I'm glad I finally gave it a go, because I found it funny as f***. And not only that, the plot itself was solid -- a well written murder mystery. There was nothing extraneous and I loved that the jokes and dialogue stayed true to the world of crime show where puppets and humans reluctantly coexist. My guess is that the excessively low rating for this film comes from reviews by folks who are offended by swear words, non-vanilla sex and sardonic humour. So if that stuff doesn't bother you, and if you are a fan of the actors and over-the-top silliness played straight, I'd say definitely give it a watch. See more Otaku F @JaneDoe844 Dec 22 While watching it, I had a good time, yes some of the jokes were flat some made me laugh. I mean I wasn't sure what I was expecting but It was a good way for me to kill some time. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it, I'm kind of in the middle. This movie gave me Avenue Q vibes. Not for kids at all. The only thing that dragged on was the puppet sex and ejectlation scene it kind of dragged on more than it should have and did leave me feeling uncomfortable after a while. The so called twist, I called it before the reveal. If your bored got nothing really going on or to do i'd say check it out just make sure your kids are asleep before you do. This move was ok I've seen worse ones. This movie won't be for everyone but I was more seeing it as a parody movie crime/comedy parody. Would i watch it again probably I honestly found myself enjoying it. So if you are a fan of Avenue Q then you might like this movie. See more Marissa K @MarissaStackedUp Dec 10 MINDLESSLY FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING MOVIE. I TOTALLY CHECKED OUT OF MY LIFE'S ISSUES AND JOINED THESE DETECTIVES ON THE CASE. THIS MOVIE HAS SOME VERY BIG HITTERS IN THE COMEDY WORLD, AND I WAS VERY MUCH ENTERTAINED! * BONUS POINTS IF YOU PARTAKE IN SOME GARDENING BEFORE AND DURING THIS MOVIE, IT REALLY INCREASES THE LAUGHS! See more Asher T @Ashertavar Dec 10 I have no idea why folks weren't into this show. Lol I laughed pretty much through the whole damn thing. Stupid, funny, weird, and rewatchable. See more MariofanAlex445 Oct 26 A film about a bunch of puppets doing raunchy things. I didn’t expect to enjoy it much, but the jokes are actually more than just “ha that puppet did something naughty”. Some of them were genuinely just funny. 3/5 stars. See more Read all reviews
