Emma Stefansky Slate Von Trier may be a provocateur, but his brand of provocation seems to be growing stale. Apr 8, 2019 Full Review David Stratton The Australian The violence in The House That Jack Built is horrific...you've been warned. Rated: 1/5 Mar 8, 2019 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald If this shrill, manipulative, sledge-hammer allegory is right for our times, give me Dante any day. Von Trier has certainly done better, but never worse. Rated: 2/5 Mar 5, 2019 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views If you enjoy serial killer movies, do not watch The House That Jack Built expecting traditional, satisfying fare. If you are a von Trier fan, he has done better work, and something in this film feels lacking. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's precisely because I see the merits of his form that I find its overly mindful digressions into self-indulgence tiresome. Steven P The House That Jack Built is a psychological, extreme, oddly comedic, and deeply unsettling art-house horror film — as much a meditation on violence and artistic expression as it is a deeply harrowing cinematic experience. This is not for casual horror fans. We’re talking professional-grade disturbing — not quite on the level of Salò or A Serbian Film, but uncomfortably close (yes, I called out the big dogs for this review). However, if you appreciate provocative, thought-provoking, and challenging cinema, this film delivers in full, but it is a disturbing watch. Note: If the words "it's just a movie" don't work for you, I don't suggest watching this, as it will be pure nightmare fuel! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Audience Member I have always enjoyed horror, crime, serial killer, violent, dark, and overall weird films. I did appreciate this film, but it is not for the faint of heart. Warning; the violence is horrific. Most of the violence is toward women. Sometimes children and animals. Graphically depicted scenarios of a depraved murderer. Makes “A Clockwork Orange” seem like a Disney movie. Well acted by Matt Dillon. It’s also almost three hours long. If you’re not into that, just watch Dexter. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/25 Full Review Erin F I’ve never seen a movie written or directed by Lars Von Trier, and I hope I never have to again. This mind-numbingly long and dense justification for violence towards women left me sorry I ever learned the name. On one hand, I can give some credit to the film poking fun at how glaringly obvious serial killer of this time period could be without getting caught. But anyone who is smart enough to pick up on that also knows that this is mostly torture porn and navel gazing. About two thirds of the way through the monologuing started to make my eyes glaze over. Anyone who has ever talked to a pretentious 19 year old art bro knows the feeling of watching this movie and how much it makes you want to tear all your skin off. All of the kills seemed designed to specifically make women uncomfortable, from the gratuitous close ups of choking, to the intense emotional manipulation, to the boob gore. It lends no gravity to the violence it depicts, and it’s obvious neither the camera man nor the director respect the actresses (or women in general). Don’t waste your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review ‎ ‎ This is probably the most uncompromising of von Trier's films. Its storytelling, acting and tone is perfect. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Ian H Disappeared up it's own backside after a promising start. Some very dark moments Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Sams K It was very cool until the ending that it's too much allegorical. I think it's a very deep introspection of Von Trier, a well-done movie but it's not what I would have wanted to see. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
