Jason Bailey Flavorwire Cumberbatch helps elevate what could've been a rote boilerplate biopic into a film with the spark of a live wire. Jun 7, 2016 Full Review Mara Reinstein Us Weekly A moving tribute to an extraordinary man. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 19, 2015 Full Review David Stratton The Australian What could have been a very dry and earnest film emerges, under the intelligent direction of Norwegian Morten Tyldum working from a screenplay by Graham Moore, as a gripping and still rather extraordinary story. Rated: 4/5 Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Imitation Game takes too many dramatic liberties in adapting for the screen but at the end of the day, the film does help right a wrong in recognizing the code-breakers--including Alan Turing--for their work during World War II. Rated: 4/5 Dec 24, 2024 Full Review Benjamín Harguindey EscribiendoCine The movie goes beyond requiem thanks to Cumberbatch's performance, the supporting actors and the surprising intensity of a spy thriller set mainly in two rooms and a garage. Allie F The story of Alan Turing and what others did at Bletchley Park is one that the world should know about. Of course, for cinematic purposes, the narrative heavily leans on a specific storyline that does take artistic license on the actual events that took place historically. The truth is that there were many heroes in the war, and there are still other untold stories of efforts just as valiant. That said, Cumberbatch and Knightly did a great job in conveying some of the complex feelings and emotions that arose from many difficult situations. Despite the departure from some historical details and facts, it's a well-made film. One I've watched multiple times since. It's heartbreaking what Turing had to undergo after what he helped do, and definitely a tear jerker for that reason. Great movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/22 Full Review Iamwhoi M I love this movie. Superb acting brings it to life. Alan Turing should be remembered as a bona-fide hero for what he accomplished. The fact that he was persecuted for his sexuality is a black mark against the society who persecuted him, not the man. Such a disservice to a man who contributed so much to the allied forces. One can only guess how many lives he saved with the power of his intellect. I've seen it estimated at 14 million lives. I hope he is remembered in history better than he was treated in life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Jace E The acting is superb, the premise is fascinating and the tension is palpable. Benedict Cumberbatch does an excellent job of embodying Alan Turing and embracing his quirks. As I reflect on the plot after finishing the film, I think that it might have been better suited for a short film, rather than a full length feature. There were series of moments that felt like nothing happened, which created pacing issues in my mind. That being said, I still enjoyed the film quite a bit. Best Character: Alan Best Quote: "Sometimes it's the very people who no one imagines anything of, who do the things no one can imagine." - Christopher Best Scene: Running out of the Party Best Piece of Score: "The Imitation Game" Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Audience Member Amazing story and commentary on how far we have to go in accepting one another. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Audience Member Very nice movie, and most of it is based on true story... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review TV D I really enjoyed this movie. What could have been a tedious subject -- codebreaking -- was dramatic and suspenseful. All of the actors were terrific and you really care about them, especially Benedict Cumberbatch's character. You admire his brilliance but sympathize with his difficulties relating to people. And the relationship between him and Keira Knightley is poignant. I really think this is an excellent film.
