The film is trite on the surface, but through some complex plotting, writer-director Jenée LaMarque slyly incorporates foreboding themes of guilt and delusion that push the farcical elements to the brink. Go to Full Review

The premise of "The Pretty One" may be far-fetched, but it's carried out with sincerity and the results are amusing, ironic, and thoughtful. Here's a small-scale movie that offers a gleam of satisfaction. Go to Full Review

Outright ridiculous and utterly farfetched. Go to Full Review

An enjoyable distraction that's thankfully not afraid to be a bit more adult about matters of sexual attraction. Go to Full Review

The Pretty One serves as director Jenée LaMarque's directorial debut, and while her style isn't revolutionary, it is a fun movie. Go to Full Review

One of those films with such a rich premise, you can't believe it hasn't been made before, yet you sure believe it could've only been made by LaMarque. Go to Full Review

Madam D Sep 5 Despite being a pretty silly plot, the acting is good and the reality of just being yourself very worthwhile. See more Hannah D Feb 2 I am on a Jake Johnson binge right now after binging New Girl for the first time and this film was next on my list. Initially, I only watched it to support Jake but as the film started and went on, I really got invested. I thought Zoe Kazan was incredible, not only at playing two very different women, but also at playing one woman trying to be two women at once. Laurel was a sweet, silly, awkward, and passionate mess that made the film worth watching. Seeing her inner torment and watching her try to adapt to a life she knows nothing about was heartbreaking and comical all in one. Jake Johnson playing opposite Zoe Kazan as the sweet, sarcastic, handsome neighbour, Basel, was a delight to watch. I thought his performance was top notch and I'm realising not many actors out there can play 'longing and yearning' quite like him. He truly is a versatile and talented actor, and Zoe was amazing and lit up the screen with her powerful portrayal of a grieving sister trying to move on with a life she doesn't know anything about. Though it is not a well-known film, it has quickly risen to one I put on my Annual-Rewatch list. Very beautiful, very sweet, very heart wrenching, and very, very good. Five stars from me! Well done! <3 See more Aida M 08/17/2024 I expected more out of it, too slow, dragging, predictable. See more 01/12/2022 Despite what others have rated I thought this was a Great feel good Movie. I Would classify this film to be a Dark Comedy. I found Zoe Kazan and Jake Johnsons relationship to be comical, Adorable and the highlight of the movie. I will definitely watch again in the future. It is sad but uplifting at the same time. The beginning scene is a bit awkward but shows just how lost she really is. See more Read all reviews
