Jacob Oller AV Club Filmmaker Ai Yoshimura and studio MAPPA condense the florid tale into a two-hour anime feature that saps some depth from its characters but loses little of its larger appeal. Rated: B- Apr 30, 2025 Full Review Valerie Kalfrin AWFJ.org The Rose of Versailles takes creative liberties with history and creative swings, but it’s an indulgence just for curiosity’s sake. May 28, 2025 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media As a remake of the original 1979-80 television series, this new film adaptation fails to say much. May 7, 2025 Full Review Charles Hartford But Why Tho? A Geek Community The Rose of Versailles does its best to condense its narrative into a two-hour movie. Sadly, the film is more like an anime recap movie than a full feature, and not even a good one at that. Rated: 3.5/10 May 1, 2025 Full Review Petrana Radulovic Polygon I can see how a recap movie with beautiful animation and song sequences would appeal to a longtime fan of this franchise, but for someone new to the story, it just feels like a frustrating hint of something even better. May 1, 2025 Full Review Mariló Delgado Espinof It's a shame that MAPPA didn't opt for a trilogy of films, which might have allowed for more attention to detail, but even so, The Rose of Versailles is a very special show that celebrates [Riyoko] Ikeda's work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/25 Full Review Andrea Z Horrible character development (non existant really), annoying musical never-ending scenes and the story of Oscar completely changed. The stoic Oscar, who by the way was seen as a man throughout practically the whole tv series, now everybody knows she is a woman and she is crying for at least 60% of her screen time, and also... she has a mother, like wtf! Who rewrote this?!. This is an insult to the original Lady Oscar. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Cristy L This is the type of anime I'm looking forward to I remember seeing the old version and I loved it way ahead of its time netflix did there big one with this one amazing I cried ❤️ ♥️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Vector V The first question that arises after watching this feature film based on the legendary 70's series is: "Was this film necessary?" Unfortunately NO! The screenplay is superficial and too compressed. The development of the characters is completely non-existent and the musical interludes are quite annoying. In order to somehow connect the scenes together, the director makes his own somewhat useless voice-over which in the end is nothing more than a commentary on images. The direction does not care about the facial expressions of the protagonists, as the TV series had accustomed us to, and therefore they all seem mono-expressive. And it forgets many characters who are not even named. The colors are too invasive, especially the gold color, forcing you to use sunglasses during the viewing. Added to this is an excessive use of CGI which, instead of enriching the work, impoverishes it, as the separation between drawings and 3D CGI is too clear. Among the most notable absences are the "Roses" yes the "roses" that in the series framed many scenes, a clear reference to the title of the manga "Versailles no bara" here they are completely absent, showing that whoever wrote and directed the work did not fully understand their meaning. The dialogues are particularly theatrical and lack depth making them decidedly boring. A missed opportunity that will sadden long-time fans and leave the new generations indifferent. I add that the addition of some scenes present in the manga, but not in the TV series, does not enrich the film but impoverishes it, being quite thrown in there. Ironically a story that praises freedom in this adaptation is full of "censorship", for example in the love scenes to please the bigoted West, demonstrating how even Japan is losing that creative freedom that once made its works unique even if conceived for a general audience, for vile money. P.S. there is also a serious writing error, namely that Andrè, now blind, sees a soldier pointing his rifle at Oscar.
