What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Warrior Queen of Jhansi has a fascinating real-life character at its center, but her story is ill-served by this heavy-handed adaptation.

Leslie Felperin Guardian Altogether it's a rousing, passionate bit of film-making on a reasonably epic scale, with a cast of hundreds deployed for some big dusty battle scenes, which are duly impressive. Rated: 3/5 Dec 11, 2020 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News There's little doubt that Rani's story is an engaging and undertold chapter of history, but The Warrior Queen of Jhansi is not the best way to tell it. Rated: D+ Dec 3, 2019 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Firstpost Devika is sincere in her portrayal in a simplified narrative that does little more than follow the form of a school essay on the Indian warrior queen. Rated: 2/5 Dec 3, 2019 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz This potentially exciting, inspiring tale drowns in a sea of predictable action beats and frightening facial fungus. Rated: 2/5 Jul 28, 2021 Full Review Johnny Loftus Decider A functional period tale with a good bit to reveal about an inspiring historical figure. Feb 17, 2021 Full Review Soham Gadre Film Inquiry For the lack of good acting, mostly resulting from poor dialogue, the movie at least manages to represent its characters as genuinely believable figures of a real history. That's the least you can ask for from a historical biopic. Dec 20, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Julia This is a fascinating story, the lead actress does a great job adding humanity to this larger than life historical figure, and the battle scenes are awesome. Also I loved seeing this story told through the eyes of an Indian female director & was moved by the details she included in the story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/19 Full Review Darrel 73yrs old Very interesting true story Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/23/19 Full Review Sharon P We really liked this film because: 1) it is a very interesting story 2) it is filmed and performed by East Asian Indians so it has an authentic feel 3) it shows the British as bigoted invaders and the Indians as compassionate humans 4) and it is inspirational. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/21/19 Full Review Audience Member Captivating! Strong characters & gorgeous visuals..Overall beautifully made film.. Kudos to the makers! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The Warrior Queen of Jhansi disposes of the idea that biopics about the geopolitical disputes of colonial era royalty must be boring. Not coincidentally, it also disposes of the idea that the only worthy subjects of "serious" historical films are old white men. Both the action and the subject matter are refreshing. The cinematography and directing are both beautiful. And Devika Bhise delivers an absolutely exceptional performance as the main protagonist. You must go see this film! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked this movie quite a bit. It's "based on a true story", though who knows how much Hollywood magic is added to the tale, and gives a brief overview of one of India's famous female leaders of the revolt against Great Britain's East India Company in the mid-1850s. The lead actress and co-writer, Devika Bhise as the "warrior queen", is just adorable to look at and delivers a nice performance. Costumes are excellent, and the few battle scenes are good. Overall the movie does feel a bit "light" or maybe even rushed, and probably should have spent more time fleshing some of the major characters. One of the few movies I'd say would have been much better with another 20-30 minutes added to the 1:43 run-time. If this were a Netflix or Amazon Prime movie, it would probably get much better reviews. Glad I didn't let the RT scores keep my away from it. There are much better movies in theaters right now if you're limited on time or money, but this one's worth a matinee or A-list low-cost viewing.
