Audience Member Known as This Man Can't Die and Long Day of Hate, this Italian Western stars Guy Madison, who had been the title character in the TV series The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock, as Martin Benson, a Civil War veteran and former outlaw who is trying to clean up his act by working as an undercover agent for the U.S. Army. He's already helped capture and execute three members of the gang he's snuck into — he sends the reward and guns home to his father, a man who still looks at him as a criminal — but he's tired of this life. Yet his hard work will get his captain promoted and he's forced to stay working. The gang learns that Benson was the man who has done them wrong, so they find out where his family lives and murder his parents and assault his sister, leaving her mute. When his brother Daniel finds one of the gang members near death, he decides to nurse him back to health so he and his brother can get revenge. Maybe Benson's life isn't going so well. That said, Rosalba Neri is his girlfriend. There are worse things, right? Director Gianfranco Baldanello — who often worked as Frank G. Carroll — also directed Colt In the Hand of the Devil, Danger!! Death Ray, Man with the Golden Winchester and Very Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind. He also wrote the giallo The Girl In Room 2A but mostly worked as an assistant director. He also co-directed The Uranium Conspiracy with future Cannon Pictures boss Menahem Golan. This movie has more nudity than several Italian westerns put together. That's really all it has to make it stand out, other than the two great titles. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review delysid d a competent italian western Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/01/18 Full Review Audience Member 130511: This movie is ok. It features a very small, bugle-playing trapper, on a very large burrow if that means anything. Actually, there are a couple other freaky characters along with a whole bunch of black hats in this gun smuggling love story. Lots of fisticuffs and shootouts done in the classic spaghetti way. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Routine revenge-themed Western that may be a shade better than most of its contemporaries. Obviously the producers did not understand Rosalbal Neri's appeal, she is vastly underutilized. She stole the show in LADY FRANKENSTEIN. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Low-budget western with decent production values that give it an 'atmosphere'. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member For this one I'll start with the good, then the bad, then the ugly. What's good is the story with its lineup of interesting characters. Guy Madison plays Martin Benson, a hero government agent who wins every time. A very convincing western film hero. Additionally the score by Amadeo Tommasi adds the appropriate colour to every scene that is typical of a western of this variety. The only thing bad with this film is the occasional flash of bad acting from a few, but this can be forgiven in a western of this era and especially with them being overshadowed by the performances of Guy Madison, Rik Battaglia and Alberto Dell'Aqua. What's ugly are the brutal and violent scenes for a western movie. By today's standards this may not be so shocking but for 1968, the old couple getting shot together in each other's arms could have taken a toll on the emotions. The flashes of female breasts and the rape scene are not completely necessary to build the emotional atmosphere but significantly add to the movie's style, for better or for worse. Overall a very satisfying movie that is packed with all the action and adventure that a western movie should be flavoured with. At the end of it you just want to sit down and watchit over again.
