Steve D The acting is strong the story too frustrating. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Audience Member What happens when you're on the tracks of life after war? Director Henry Jaglom makes a film of the counterculture to the 70s of the angry lost innocence of the Vietnam War Dennis Hopper is 1st Sergeant Jack Falen After becoming a veteran he is charged with escorting the body of a fallen soldier for a proper burial in California He meets a woman Stephanie played by Tayrn Power, a college student and falls for her But the whole time on this train he starts to lose himself either his mind or soul flashing back to his combat on the field It gets very confusing with the editing in this plus the odd music choices Character mosaic or psychological nightmare; you be the judge I expected a bit better Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A disturbingly heartbreaking look into the mind of a US soldier trying to cope with ptsd in an uphill psychological battle. Tom Milne Sight & Sound Dennis Hopper (brilliant throughout)... [struggles] to assert his bitterness and anger over an overwhelming impulse manifested by his hand to come up in an obedient military salute. Mar 31, 2020 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times The movie has the stoned, improvised look of an artifact out of the 1960's, having less to do with considered opposition to the war than with a vague sort of dissatisfaction with everything, and no idea what to do about it. Feb 15, 2017 Full Review Chris Petit Time Out The deeper it delves into symbolism, the more incoherent and hallucinatory it becomes. Feb 15, 2017 Full Review Felix Gonzalez Jr. DVD Review Jaglom seems unable to decide whether he wants it to be a character mosaic or a psychological nightmare ... Feb 15, 2017 Full Review Film4 Staff Film4 The rough, improvised structure suits the inarticulacy which the movie seeks to examine. Feb 15, 2017 Full Review TV Guide Stark reality mingled with paranoid fantasies in this film about a Vietnam veteran accompanying a fallen friend's body across the US for a proper burial give it an uneasy feeling.
