Critics Consensus

We Are Your Friends boasts magnetic stars and glimmers of insight, but they're lost in a clichéd coming-of-age story as programmed as the soundtrack's beats.

Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Efron is a natural and likeable presence on screen and has proven to be a pretty decent actor in films like Hairspray and The Paperboy. But the problem with "regularness" is that, in the wrong hands, it's kind of dull. Rated: 2/4 Jun 12, 2016 Full Review Charles Bramesco Movie Mezzanine In the line of succession for Channing Tatum's throne as Hollywood's go-to charismatic bro type, Efron's still pretty far down. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 3, 2015 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Bentley is on great form. If anything, though, he's too good. Every time he disappears, the music dies. Rated: 2/5 Aug 30, 2015 Full Review Ankit Ojha Cinema Elite “We Are Your Friends” is, at the end of the day, a harmless movie that’s difficult to strongly recommend, but one I’d encourage readers to take on a spin once. Rated: 3/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...like the central character featured here, We Are Your Friends has a bad reputation, but if you’re prepared to shut up and enjoy the music and some blissed-out visuals, it’s a surprisingly smooth ride... Munkhchimeg T Dreamy good movie. May some things don’t be sorted out, life carries on. Through this, music definitely helps. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Bahad j It's a lot of work from the recording and music team. The film can be seen. Because it has a great sound. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Benjamin B This movie is very inavative, and has a lot of good cinematic elegance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/24 Full Review grey I think this film deserves a lot more recognition than it got... It's one of a kind. The soundtrack is great, the story is good, the shots and cinematography are good (nothing special), and the acting is good. It brings to the table a unique way of what a film could be, as in its different. My only complaint is the ending as I feel it could have been better represented to follow the energy and hype around electronic music. If you are young, into electronic/dance music, enjoy films that can be labeled as different, or have come across this review, watch it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review ramitos d La película cumple con su propósito, me parece muy entretenida, neta esperaban ver una película de premio Oscar? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/23 Full Review Atmospheric E I largely liked this drama movie about a young man called Cole (Zac Efron) trying to become a success in the Los Angeles dance music scene as a music producer and DJ and his friends. I found Cole a likeable young man, who pursues his dreams, is self-confident without being arrogant, is compassionate and has good rapport with his mates and romantic interest. Cole's relationships with his pals Dustin Mason (Jonny Weston), Ollie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Squirrel (Alex Shaffer) as well as his mentor James Reed (Wes Bentley) and love interest Sophie (model and actress Emily Ratajkowski) drive the motion picture. I felt that the film gave a good insight into what it meant to be a twentysomething in Los Angeles in the 2010s and also provided a good treatment of life experiences such as bereavement, romance and morality. However I felt that the film could have had more of a focus on the music industry (such as record labels, music and Cole's peers (other DJs in the LA electronic dance music scene, established or not). The film says that young people should seek to achieve their aspirations, as anything is possible. I saw myself in Cole as I am an amateur young selector who is learning to mix and want to be a successful professional DJ and also music producer one day. You don't have to want to be a mixer or a music composer to enjoy this film or to get something out of it but if you are a young or old person and aspirational, or just want to see a good character-driven dramatic composition, you might enjoy this movie.
