Critics Consensus

Some may find its dark tone and slender narrative off-putting, but Spike Jonze's heartfelt adaptation of the classic children's book is as beautiful as it is uncompromising.

It's a quiet reminder of the power of scary-ish stories, and it's made with warmth, humor, and wisdom. Go to Full Review

It is bewildering but not in an emotionally complex or troublesome way. It's bewildering in a narratively confused, narratively lost, we-never-figured-out-what-we-wanted-all-this-extra-stuff-to-add-up-to sort of way. Go to Full Review

The minus I give this children's story pains me...If I had seen this film when I was eight, I would have been terrified. Go to Full Review

In Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze’s masterful translation of Maurice Sendak’s beloved book, the pains, and uncertainties of growing up find a deeply personal home. Go to Full Review

It’s as honest a tale of being a child as you’ll find on screen, with all of the fantasy and reality and joy and anxiety of childhood grounded in the imagery and the landscapes of a tyke’s mind. Go to Full Review

There's plenty of amazing, surreal imagery and a brooding atmosphere, but little magic brightens this fantasy world. Go to Full Review

Karen A Aug 27 Terrible movie!! Dull, dragging, and inane, nonsensical, and downright boring!! Literally took 2 hours to never get to the point that a 12-page book was easily able to convey with humor and clarity. It feels like they were trying to be artistic rather than tell an already perfect story, and failed miserably, while wasting obscene amounts of money on props and costumes that were "at best" lackluster... Paint drying would be more exciting and less ridiculous. See more Tripti K Aug 8 The most boring tragic children’s movie the world has ever experienced. I really enjoyed reading the book with my kid.But the movie was not very family friendly. See more Riley S. @rileysipes54 Jul 21 A beautiful, bittersweet ode to childhood imagination and emotional growing pains. Spike Jonze takes Maurice Sendak’s 10-sentence book and turns it into a hauntingly tender journey through the mind of a lonely boy. Max Records is incredible as Max, capturing the wild joy and aching sadness of a kid who feels misunderstood. The creatures—brought to life through an eerie blend of practical effects and CGI—aren’t just monsters; they’re messy, complex parts of Max’s psyche. The film’s tone is melancholic and dreamlike, more for introspective older kids and adults than toddlers expecting a fun adventure. Karen O’s score is magical. The cinematography is raw and immersive. It’s not a conventional kids’ movie, but that’s what makes it so special. A wild thing, indeed. See more Michael B Jun 22 One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen and definitely wouldn’t recommend it for children. Awful, depressing, boring as hell, almost glorifies acting out mental illness with absolutely no resolution or attempt to help from the boy’s mother. The only good quality was the special effects of the monsters, but that only gives a greater painful reminder of this piece of filth when I go back and read the original masterpiece children’s book and am reminded how close the monsters in the movie look to the book. Whoever was involved in this should be ashamed! See more WT 3 May 28 They took Maurice Sendak's wonderful, innocent fantasy world and turned it into a trauma dump full of emotional abuse, random violence, abandonment, divorce and erratic, unpredictable behavior - every adult nightmare - and then marketed it to children. My children never picked up another Sendak book again. It ruined it for them. This movie was disturbing and pointless. Shame on everyone involved.
