Adapted by Heidi Thomas from the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, this drama series is a moving, funny, colorful look at midwifery and family in 1950s East End London. It follows newly qualified midwife Jenny, who joins an eccentric, lovable community of nuns who are nurses at Nonnatus House. Jenny is surprised to find herself at a convent -- she thought she was being sent to a small private hospital -- and is initially daunted by her surroundings, most notably the formidable Sister Evangelina and the unconventional Sister Monica Joan. But Jenny gradually begins to find her way and develops incredible friendships among the nurses, as they are drawn into the lives and homes of the women and families they treat.

Ed Cumming Daily Telegraph (UK) The accidental political angle, about how we value those who care for us at our most vulnerable moments, is more effective than the overt race-relations lesson. Rated: 3/5 Jan 18, 2023 Full Review Aidan Smith Scotsman It is a drama that’s unashamedly nostalgic, unapologetically sentimental and, as the soundtrack strings gently weep, relentless in its search for the good in people. Dec 28, 2023 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) Heidi Thomas, the show's ingenious creator who has devised a dozen variations on the Nativity story since 2012, was having other fun with names. One baby's dad was called Mitchell, a nod to EastEnders... Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

David F Season 12 is here. And with it the Christmas special. Minty is going to make it the best Christmas Walford, I mean Poplar 'as ever 'ad. This series is a far cry from the early years of the show, where we followed the patients' pregnancies and first few post-natal weeks. Now it seems every episode is more-or-less self-contained, though it is nice to see the little Thalidomide girl back, facing clichéd challenges of discrimination and early artificial limbs with gusto. It's also lovely to see Reggie the Down's syndrome chap back helping in the paper shop, as well as the (current) series regulars. Sister Monica Joan's Alzheimer's disease hasn't progressed much in the past twelve years, you'll be pleased to know, but of course the biggest "diseases" the characters have to deal with are homelessness, starvation, and ignorance. Luckily, there's a friendly millionaire on hand to wave a magic wand and resolve any plot lines necessary. The music is getting on my nerves though, it's the same little snippets again and again. Could they not have commissioned some new stuff? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Dean R One of the best shows out of the UK. Just at times things was presented like it is current attitude not that from the 1950's and 60's! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
