Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture It’s unforgettable work in what’s shaping up to be a career-highlight season for McClarnon. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune “Dark Winds” has more in common with, and the deliberate pacing of, British procedurals than it does your average American cop show. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Saloni Gajjar AV Club The show distinguishes itself with a propulsive suspense, grounded protagonists, immersive cinematography, and, crucially, a rare spotlight on Native American voices both on- and off-screen. These pieces come together beautifully in season 3.  Rated: A- Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate It's significant that Robert Redford's last screen appearance was a quick cameo in the premiere episode. He's seen incarcerated in a Navajo Tribal Police jail cell, playing chess with his co-executive producer, 'Game of Thrones' author George R.R. Martin. Rated: 7/10 Sep 21, 2025 Full Review Shay McBryde Show Snob The extended eight-episode season takes you on a quest of brutal heartbreak and decisions that have left Joe Leaphorn in wistful limbo. Tormented by his past and losses, sometimes it feels like the only thing he has to hold onto is his job. Rated: A+ Jul 30, 2025 Full Review Kyle Mullin Under the Radar Old school sleuthing and shootouts to character development and ambitious visuals, Season Three of Dark Winds thrillingly defies expectations. Scott W After an outstanding season 1, and an engaging, but slightly disappointing season 2. Season 3 of Dark Winds is a huge let down. The cast is still great. Leaphorn, Chee, and Bern are great but the writing this season was amateurish. Total hogwash which got worse and more implausible with each episode. The 70's setting on the Rez is great, the characters are great, and the Navaho culture vibe is great. The writing this season was poor at best, and pathetic at worst. Do better in season 4. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review ralf e A huge step down from Seasons 1 and 2. Too many pointless side characters, the usual unlikable FBI agent, the wife that nonstop blames the husband, calling him selfish while she is doing nothing but being about herself, the dead boring border story, the ludicrous misrepresentation of reservation life not just in the 70s, but to this day, the unspeakable episode 6 in which absolutely nothing is happening (its just a filler, dreamlike one), and so forth... if there is a season 4, I will give the first episode a shot. If it picks up where this - performance wise - leaves off, I am done with the show. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Vanessa F Season 1 and 2 were amazing, loved them. Family friendly and not offensive. Season 3 is repeatedly offensive by continually in each episode saying “god**mn”. Why? It’s a good story that doesn’t need or require expletives, particularly something so offensive. Such a shame, it started out so good with amazing storylines and actors Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Kohler P I feel that the idea of an archaeologist suddenly becoming a gruesome killer to get an artefact and dress up like a demon was really a reach. Secondly the boy is running around the bush for days trying to avoid the crazy archaeologist rather than just going home? So many holes in the plot thinking. Actors are good, I just feel sorry about the poor script they got. It was disappointing based on season 1. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/25 Full Review Winsome C This series is like reading a good book. The retro aspect is also interesting; it is set in a time before cell phones, computers, GPS, or DNA were commonly in use, yet the law is still able to solve the mysteries. This series is just good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/25 Full Review Nicky P Enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, but this season go a little sticky... I mean, since the days of black and white movies and tv shows, there have been the superman archeologists ... why? I dunno, maybe archeologists train to be covert gun wielding agents after spending hours sweeping a few ounces of dirt??? ok- Indiana Jones was a bad azz archeologist, but those movies were pure comedy. So now we've moved from the butler did it, to the archeologist did it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Read all reviews
