Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture It’s unforgettable work in what’s shaping up to be a career-highlight season for McClarnon. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune “Dark Winds” has more in common with, and the deliberate pacing of, British procedurals than it does your average American cop show. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Saloni Gajjar AV Club The show distinguishes itself with a propulsive suspense, grounded protagonists, immersive cinematography, and, crucially, a rare spotlight on Native American voices both on- and off-screen. These pieces come together beautifully in season 3.  Rated: A- Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Kyle Mullin Under the Radar Old school sleuthing and shootouts to character development and ambitious visuals, Season Three of Dark Winds thrillingly defies expectations. Rated: 9/10 Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) With unsettling visuals, this season ventures a bit into horror, showcasing beings that are freaky and brutal. While the relationships make for engaging watching, Zahn McClarnon is a gripping and flawed lead that propels the series from good to great. Rated: 4/5 Mar 12, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While we’re not in love with the separate storylines for the show’s main characters, season 3 of Dark Winds continues to combine Native mysticism with whodunits rooted in the real world, all anchored by the reassuring presence of McClarnon. Tony Z Although the critics are gaga over season three, I found it to be inferior to seasons one and two. It was disjointed and overloaded with minor characters, which took away from the (not entirely persuasive) collapse of the Leaphorns' marriage. Episode 6 was a self-indulgent failure, and a waste of the audience's time. I can't think of a single thing it contributed to the story or the characters. It did make me yawn. A bright spot was the fore-fronting of Bernadette Manuelito, whose plot line was far more interesting than the Cata murder mystery. That ring-leader Spencer escaped arrest seemed far-fetched. The Ernesto Cata mystery was mediocre enough before they ambushed us with the out-of-the-blue fraud motive for the archaeologist and, heaven help us, a chase on a train. (Raise your hand if you not seen that a dozen times before.) If you're going to expand to 8 episodes from 6, you better have something better than this dishwater to spill. Oh, and did I mention that the Jenna Elfman character looked like she doubled up on her valium? If that's a dedicated FBI agent on the trail of a case she finds especially important, killers are safer than we would like to believe. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Paul o Absolutely shameful the way Robert Redford and co chose to exploit Native Americans by depicting life on their fictional Navajo reservation the way they chose to in this series completely ignoring the deplorable living conditions where today 48% of Native American households on any reservation throughout this country, including the Navajos, still don't have access to clean water while school buildings/infrastructure lays rotting in the background in a state of disrepair, living conditions too horrible for most Americans to even imagine. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Audience Member Season 2 is the best so far 🤩👊 The officers can't shoot straight and always get hurt, but it's an engaging story with great characters 🧐✌️ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Elizabeth C Unlike most shows I watch, this one actually gets better every season. Zahn McClarnon gives a wonderfully engaging performance. In both highly dramatic and quieter scenes, he is fascinating to watch. The rest of the cast, leads and supporting parts, are just as excellent. I appreciated the overlap of conflicting worlds and experiences of these characters represented through such unique writing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Carol W The acting is excellent and you'll find yourself absorbed into the story. Being that I'm not a big fan of cop type shows, and that I actually enjoyed it, I'd say this is sure worth watching with fascinating story lines and a touch of the mystical. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Dana D Seriously?. Incredibly bad writing, just plain stupid. Some acting is ok, the only reason I won’t rate it 1 star.
