Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture It’s unforgettable work in what’s shaping up to be a career-highlight season for McClarnon. Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune “Dark Winds” has more in common with, and the deliberate pacing of, British procedurals than it does your average American cop show. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Saloni Gajjar AV Club The show distinguishes itself with a propulsive suspense, grounded protagonists, immersive cinematography, and, crucially, a rare spotlight on Native American voices both on- and off-screen. These pieces come together beautifully in season 3.  Rated: A- Mar 11, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While we’re not in love with the separate storylines for the show’s main characters, season 3 of Dark Winds continues to combine Native mysticism with whodunits rooted in the real world, all anchored by the reassuring presence of McClarnon. Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Christine N. Ziemba Paste Magazine Leaphorn’s life, marriage and job are all in jeopardy, with every episode hurtling toward episode 6, “Ábidoo’niidę́ę́” (“What We Had Been Told”), which proves to be McClarnon’s tour de force. Rated: 9/10 Mar 9, 2025 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Tribune-Review There are grittier, hipper, more popular crime dramas coursing through the TV/streaming ecosystem -- Tulsa King, Presumed Innocent, The Rookie -- but none of those shows can match the quality of AMC’s Dark Winds. Mar•Garet W Have to say Episode I of Season III wasn't terrible. Season II was more than a bit of a let-down coming off of a strong Season I, so this Premiere gives me hope for the overall series yet. (of course I'll reserve final judgement when it wraps later this Spring ;-)) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review William S Starts out shocking and improves from there. Simply excellent. The cinematography seems to be getting better and it was always quite good. Jim Chee has a new look and Bernie takes on the border. We loved the first episode. A very funny scene in the jail with the 2 producers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
