Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.

The show distinguishes itself with a propulsive suspense, grounded protagonists, immersive cinematography, and, crucially, a rare spotlight on Native American voices both on- and off-screen. These pieces come together beautifully in season 3.

It's significant that Robert Redford's last screen appearance was a quick cameo in the premiere episode. He's seen incarcerated in a Navajo Tribal Police jail cell, playing chess with his co-executive producer, 'Game of Thrones' author George R.R. Martin.

The extended eight-episode season takes you on a quest of brutal heartbreak and decisions that have left Joe Leaphorn in wistful limbo. Tormented by his past and losses, sometimes it feels like the only thing he has to hold onto is his job.

Amid the harsh, beautiful landscape of the Navajo Nation in 1974, newly-promoted Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Sergeant Bernie Manualito grapple with the personal fallout of a deadly case that forced them to confront difficult truths about their community and themselves. Their paths diverge when Leaphorn investigates a seemingly routine cattle theft that quickly escalates into a complex conspiracy tied to the outside world, while Manualito finds herself on an unexpected solo mission into dangerous territory. As a relentless killer begins targeting those close to them, Leaphorn and Manualito must reconcile their differing approaches to justice and trust to uncover the connection before the secrets of the past consume their present. This season, the moral ambiguity of the remote reservation forces them to risk everything they hold dear to protect the traditional ways from a modern darkness.

Season 3 has lost some of the novelty and focus of the first two seasons, but still head and shoulders above much of what else is out there.

Well written and acted, Season three has taken viewers in a slightly different direction which is well done but esoteric and may lose some viewers. McClaron is a powerful actor who thoroughly inhabits Leaphorn giving him three dimensions (in this season four). The rest of the cast is strong as well and the sets, costumes and scenery must be mentioned as combined they take us to a very real world
