      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Faraway Downs may intrigue some as an interesting experiment, but Baz Luhrmann's reassessment of a past work doesn't fix the original Australia's deficiencies while adding to its bloat.

Previous Kylie Northover The Age (Australia) Everything is still overblown, except, disappointingly, the story of Nullah; the intention is there, but much of the Stolen Generations storyline remains somewhat superficial. 2.5/5 Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Amelia Stout Slant Magazine Baz Luhrmann seems less interested in accurately depicting Australia’s ugly past than in creating a national myth. 2.5/4 Nov 27, 2023 Full Review Phil Harrison Guardian Sadly, the same problems remain: Faraway Downs still feels baggy, bloated, lacking in emotional or historical nuance and tonally confused. It’s The African Queen meets Crocodile Dundee. 1/5 Nov 26, 2023 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Baz Luhrmann's exotic, exhilarating re-working of his 2008 film 'Australia,' now streaming as a six-episode mini-series with an hour of never-before-seen footage, new opening credits, a new theme and song. 8/10 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Joly Herman Common Sense Media Sweeping, dramatic, and a tad predictable, this Baz Luhrmann vehicle scoops the viewer into a whirlwind epic that zeroes in on racism inherent in Australian culture. Dec 10, 2023 Full Review Raven Brunner Decider Overall, the series transforms the lukewarm drama into the grand epic that Luhrmann originally set out to make. Previous Joe E The movie version is so much better. The TV version feels like just a chopped up version of the movie, with bad pacing, lackluster music, and a bewildering and disappointing alternate ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Alicia S I enjoyed the movie when it was in theaters, and I enjoyed revisiting it in this series format. Very beautiful and moving! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Alex C I'm not sure why the critics disliked this one so much. I thought it worked great as a series, allowing the epic the breathing room and pacing that it needed. I also enjoyed the framing around Nullah's perspective and the added scenes really helped draw me into the world of the story. Then of course there's the excellent cast and spectacular cinematography. I'd recommend it to anyone who asks. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review Susan B Of course as gorgeous and epic as the original film, but with more time for characters to react to their dramatic situations before some new plot point comes along. Also fills in certain confusing gaps and beefs up the roles of the minor characters a bit. Absolutely worth a watch if you loved the first film or if you've never seen it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/23 Full Review Dede S Very good and keeps your interest! Pretty fast moving with a good story line. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Louisa D I thoroughly enjoyed most of the new footage - fills in the gaps in the story. Not sure the new ending was necessary but it was certainly dramatic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews Next Post a review
