It is difficult, though, to begrudge the show for embracing its more sentimental impulses at this late stage. And it remains one of the most enjoyable shows on television, less spiky than it was, but warmer in its place. Go to Full Review

The good news is that this final run is a clear step up from the woolly third and fourth seasons that saw Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance land a coveted spot hosting a late-night talkshow. Go to Full Review

“Hacks” lives alongside its lead characters, inviting us into their worldview so that we never want to leave. That’s another hallmark of a great sitcom, and Season 5 leaves no doubt that “Hacks” belongs among the greats. Go to Full Review

Occasionally, the ‘message’ of episodes can be a bit ham-fisted, but those acting chops mean the themes of ageing, failure and being forgotten are always movingly played. Go to Full Review

We’re hoping against hope that the final season of Hacks is funnier than its first episode, but we’re going to watch it either way, because we’ve enjoyed spending time with these character so much. Go to Full Review

Sam S @Sammie33 1d I really don't quite understand the audience rating. I think this season maintains its high standards. It isn't as sharp in that deb and ava have gone from butting heads to having a real, loving friendship. It is a natural progression and a different area being explored. Being the last season, it is a little melancholic in that the characters are moving on. t has that feeling of closing out this chapter. It is a different vibe from the other seasons. No matter what, the characters are so superbly cast that there is always something funny going on. Jean Smart is like Denzel to me. If she's in it, even if it isn't the best, you will always get something out of it. So much better than 90% of comedy shows on right now. See more Gerry W @RT60693298 1d I'm writing this review after watching the first 3 episodes of Season 5, and wishing HBO would have sent me the whole season to view like they did the critics posted here who have obviously seen & reviewed the whole season. The first episode of this new season was a bit shaky for me, but episodes 2 and 3 were pure enjoyment again, back in the comedic and touching stride of the previous 4 seasons. I've now watched all 3 episodes twice, and enjoyed them so much I find myself recalling scenes and lines days after, and laughing all over again. This entire cast is a pleasure to watch. Hoping the remainder of the season is as well acted, written, and directed as nearly every episode of this entire series has been. This has been one heckuva terrific ride, and I hate to see it end. See more Dave B @mathbot 2d I believe it was Pete Holmes who said that the key to narratives that feature stand up comedy is that the jokes actually have to be funny. Every single joke delivered on stage in this series has come off like a lazily written placeholder for the script that never got punched up. The show so heavily features Debra delivering these tired vaudevillian jokes and cutting to audiences of hip millennials struggling to breathe from laughing too hard. If the quality of Debra's comedy is the driving force of the series and it's no good, it's hard to get invested in anything else in the story. See more Tim G @Fanman19 3d Heartbreaking to admit, but the series peaked at the end of season 3 with Ava’s beautiful monologue and revenge plot. I have no idea what the paid critics are reviewing but I barely recognize Hacks anymore. Almost unwatchable at this point - I still can’t forgive them for "Dance Mom". I don’t fault the actors, but I’ve rarely seen a show drop off quite this steeply, it’s like the producers and writing team gave up, which is sad because the show could have been a classic. New fans, stick to the first three seasons and pretend that the show ends there. See more Michael K @kennedyland Apr 22 One step over the line . . . one season too many. This wonderful show became tired and ran on fumes. See more Pedro T @pedrodteixeira Apr 11 There is a growing trend of performers mistaking a large platform for expertise, often falling victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect by opining on complex geopolitical issues without the necessary depth. This show, once an enjoyable escape, has become unwatchable due to the lead's choice to alienate her audience with radical political rhetoric. It is a masterclass in how an actor can dismantle their own professional goodwill by failing to recognize the value of discretion. See more Read all reviews
