Critics Consensus

Well-acted but off-puttingly sordid, Monsters leaves viewers feeling guilty without enough pleasure to compensate.

Inkoo Kang The New Yorker The astoundingly prolific showrunner melds his modes as provocateur and clumsy social-justice warrior, with mixed results. Oct 8, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The second season of Ryan Murphy’s biographical crime anthology literally doesn’t know when to stop. If you want to credit this to ambition, then there are rewards... but if you lean towards lurid excess, Monsters certainly incriminates itself. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 27, 2024 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times Monsters proves itself capable of confronting a complex case with sensitivity — which makes its increasing sensationalism and salaciousness all the more frustrating. Rated: 3/5 Sep 27, 2024 Full Review Nicolás Medina Montevideo Portal / Latido Beat The series ends up leaving a bittersweet taste: powerful at its best moments, but unable to sustain its initial promise. It’s a bold and challenging work from one of our most prolific and dedicated queer showmen... Oct 29, 2024 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post While the Menendez brothers’ story is undeniably interesting, I found the characters were all people I didn’t want to spend time with, whether or not there was a miscarriage of justice. Gregory S I have really enjoyed the Monsters series so far. I did enjoy the Dalmer one a bit more, but this one was pretty good. The actors did an amazing job, as did the director. The primary problem with this series is not the script, direction, or acting. The problem is the Menedez brothers themselves, and everything the media chose to do with the case. I remember when this trial was happening, I was a youngen still in junior high and high school. The trial was discussed with everyone and everywhere, and absolutely no one believed a word that the brothers said. No one thought that the sexual abuse happened. I actually remember a lot of us laughing about it during some classes. I mean, back then sexual child abuse was truly not discussed and not taken as seriously as it is today. Which I truly am thankful the subject is mainstream and that there has been massive directives to help victims and punish Predators. This is one thing that the series really brings up, and I am thankful. But, whether anyone can believe the accusations or not is terribly difficult. Primarily due to how the brothers have been portrayed in the media since they were arrested. I thought this was a pretty good series, and am actually thankful for the Monster series taking this case on. Really excited for the next one with Ed Gein. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Blue J Something as heavy as their story shouldn’t have been made into a show without the two brothers knowledge in the first place. The show included “rumours” of the brothers having a somewhat intimate relationship, and the creators felt they had creative liberties involving a very true and traumatic event. And lastly naming it “monsters”? Why? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review Jason T Great performance from the main brothers. Each episode follows the plot from a different angle. Isn’t going to you build up more and more detail as the episodes go on. It is sordid in places. But powerful in its delivery. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Paulo Z Cooper Koch as Erik, Nicholas Chavez as Lyle and Javier Bardem as Jose really, Performance that are unforgettable. The series became my favorite of the anthology genre and also the season I enjoyed the most from the series "MONSTERS".
