Critics Consensus

Still a bright beacon in the Star Trek universe, Strange New Worlds' third season makes up for its lack of narrative ambition with gleaming execution.

Ed Power Daily Telegraph (UK) It has everything the discerning Trekkie could want. Epic interstellar battles, dodgy yellow knitwear and alien races with pointy plastic ears that look like they might go warp factor nine near an open flame. Rated: 4/5 Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Clint Worthington RogerEbert.com A show that continues to uphold the ideals of its franchise’s point of origin, even as its swings boldly go nowhere all that deep. Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Christian Blauvelt IndieWire All that’s left is the fun. Hey, who are we to complain when it’s a show this fun? But “Star Trek” always has had the capacity to be more, and so has this show. Rated: B- Jun 16, 2025 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson ill LYTeracy (Substack) How does one pass judgment on effective fan service, when the fan is me, and I feel served...yet I can't help feeling it's at the expense of what the TV show at hand ought to be doing? Aug 26, 2025 Full Review Monita Roy Mohan Stereo Geeks (Podcast) It’s got the balance of episodic storytelling and a continuing narrative. But the gimmicky episodes aren’t the only highlights. They’ve given us such lovely characters, played by these compelling actors who just capture the screen. Aug 9, 2025 Full Review Travis Johnson Blunt Magazine It’s a throwback in the best possible way, embracing the derring-do spirit of the original series, along with its determination to explore a broad range of ideas and scenarios. Alex I Great show under the surface, ruined by overstuffed messaging. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Zachary E Seasons 1 and 2 were good, especially when compared to the travesty that is Kurtzman's nhilistic vision of Trek. Season 3 is so bad that I stopped watching mid episode. Trek should not be like every other mediocre sci-fi out there, let along a teen soap opera. ----- I recently went through TNG and DS9 again and wow, this doesn't even come close to how amazing those are when they get going. By season 3 of DS9 the world building alone is out of this world amazing. ------ When you couple that with the gems in seasons 4-7 (both TNG & DS9), the gems that put Trek in another league of scifi, it really shows how little they tried stay within the legacy of the franchise. And the sheer incapability of the writers to write real Trek. ------ It's not philosophical, intellectual, teaching people lessons that are rarely taught. Instead it leans on easy, cheesy, mainstream lessons. It doesn't seek to elevate the viewer and provoke the kind of deep thoughts and revelations you get like when reading a great book. ----- No, it is all aesthetic, a hollow version that copies ideas from other stories without much depth beyond the modern offerings of what is considered smart and meaningful. ----- It would be better if it didn't continually disservice legacy characters, but it does that with disregard or ignorance. ----- SNW also leans way too much on the silly episodes that you might find here and there in classic Trek. The thing is, those episodes were often after a series of hard hitting episodes. If anything they were filler, not the main thing. ----- Again, I liked the first two seasons, although I found them lacking. This third season is so bad I won't be watching the remaining seasons. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Ed L Just finished Episode 7. So I can not comment on the rest of the season. As a Star Trek fan since TOS, I am surprised at some of the negative fan reaction of the show so far. There were some misses, especially the season opener; however, most of the episodes are very entertaining. Especially for episode 6 and 7 that really shined in terms of the storyline, pacing and the plot twists. The 2 episodes really captures the Star Trek feeling even if it veers away from the "canon". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/25 Full Review Audience Member This season has a wider range of quality than the last two, I loved season one and two right up to the end, This one has been a mixed bag. I hate the Gorn as enemies, Them basically being like Star Treks version of Xenomorphs is really stupid, They would of been better as Hyper Territorial Lizards who only respect the Federation after it prooves it can hold their own in a fight. And then there is some like spirit ghost thing going on with the gorn and also genetic memory, they just seem goofy like how would a species like this have evolved naturally, I can see the path of evolution amd technology that leads to the borg not the Gorn. The episodes that have nothing to do with the Gorn I mostly liked, I loved the Vulcan one, People complaining about the goofyness and the campness I feel need to go back and watch older Trek, Star Trek has always been goofy and camp and perhaps Distant Worlds is more deliberate and on the nose about it but the claims that this isn't Star Trek is silly. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Cecilia L For a series that's ostensibly about the future, Strange New Worlds season 3 is decidedly stuck in the past. The format is outdated. The scripts are terrible. Not much about this is worth watching. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Jab T I don't understand the good critics that says it's fan service. I learned English from watching Star Trek, I'm a fan even of many of the lamest episodes. But... That's not fan service. That 3rd season has too much comedy nonsense going on, it looks like there is no direction and they decided to have every writer get one of their writing fantasy realized instead of pursuing a good show dynamic. I'm really disappointed. I loved season 1 and 2, was looking forward to that 3rd one, but some episodes I can't finish on the same day because I need a break from the tone. I'd say the Orville might be more serious than that 3rd season. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Read all reviews
