      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Slick as a well-pressed suit and given watchable wattage by its cast, Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen doesn't seamlessly expand upon the original movie but has enough verve to be fun on its own terms.

John C Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is an entertaining cocktail of crime, humour, and eccentric characters. Set against the backdrop of a sprawling estate, the show gives us a world where aristocracy meets underground cannabis farming and criminal shenanigans. Theo James plays Eddie Halstead, an army officer thrust into the role of a duke after his father’s sudden demise. His incompetent and inveterate gambler of a brother, Freddy is played brilliantly by Daniel Ings. Kaya Scodelario plays the intriguing and dangerous Susie Glass, among a fantastic cast of characters. Suffused with British humour, from the dry to the over-the-top and absurd, this series is Guy Ritchie back at the top of his game, and I can't say enough good things about it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Jack L Season 1 of "The Gentleman" offers a delightful blend of cheeky dialogue, zany scenarios, and funny characters that are quintessential to Guy Ritchie films. The series crafts a compelling character arc for the protagonist, weaving his journey through the intricate underworld with wit and charm. While it may not quite match the sharpness of the original film, it still manages to deliver plenty of enjoyment and is definitely worth a watch for fans of Ritchie's signature style. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Janet B It was just alright. Chaotic story with too many characters. Redeeming moments that makes it marginally worth watching. I stuck with it and would probably watch a second season, but I certainly hope the writing, by far the weakest link, is a lot better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Kerstin G The narrative thread is sometimes too long-winded for me, everything is somehow drawn out, but Theo is great! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Alexander C Such a fun watch! Two leads killed it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Andrea D Loved this show! It was smart and interesting and fun and there was nice chemistry between Eddie and Susie. Freddie was also hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Camilla Long Times (UK) It is difficult to think of another director who’s evolved less than Ritchie. Honestly, how does he do it? Mar 11, 2024 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Ritchie is mockable for the same reason that he is imitable, which is that he birthed a genre. The trouble with The Gentlemen, though, is that it feels less like it’s been made by an imitator than it has been by a bot. Mar 11, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) The eight-episode format does not suit Ritchie. The pacing lags behind the manic kineticism of his features while it gives him even more space to indulge in his unnecessarily complicated plots. Mar 10, 2024 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation Guy Ritchie’s style translates beautifully to this format, and these characters are ridiculously entertaining. The story may not stand out, but the explosive sequences and cheeky approach makes for a fun binge. Rated: 7.5/10 Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) All Ritchie's hallmarks are here: shotguns, hard men with Kray Twin accents, briefcases full of cash... Whenever the story threatens to become challenging, captions flash up to explain who the characters are and what they're plotting. Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Cameron Frew Dexerto The Gentlemen is a sweary, giddy dose of Guy Ritchie goodness. To borrow Fletcher’s words, it’s beautiful, beautiful… TV.
