What to Know

Critics Consensus

Those About to Die doles out enough bread and circuses to state viewers' bloodlust, but its lack of compelling characters and narrative cohesion doesn't quite earn a salute.

Judy Berman TIME Magazine There's a smart and timely historical drama to be made about Rome's long decline, even one that might unfold during this tumultuous period, a decade after the cataclysmic Year of the Four Emperors. But Those About to Die certainly isn't it. Jul 24, 2024 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Lion fights, chariot races, and backroom politics – “Those About to Die” checks a lot of boxes, and does so with more artistic gravity than similarly shallow projects. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 21, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Those About to Die is melodrama pure and simple. Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Aidan Smith Scotsman Those About to Die can resemble a swords-and-sandals Succession, though sadly without the script. Rated: 3/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Pat Stacey Irish Independent Those About to Die offers the Rome-iest of Romes, carved from the cheesiest of cheeses and riddled with comfortingly familiar cliches. Aug 8, 2024 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator It hurries breathlessly from incident to incident as if terrified that the viewer might find the most blood-spattered, sexually licentious, intrigue-ridden period in the history of the world ever so slightly dull. Zahra A Once I started it I couldn't put it down. Acting is great, story is great and engrossing. Nothing got dragged out, no filler and didn't try to be GOT which was refreshing. O VFX seriously disappointed in crowd and creature sequences, sequences were rushed and badly rendered. Howeve this was countered by incredible set designs and VFX environments. Definitely worth the watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Teach L Absolutely loved this show and watched it in one day as couldn't turn it off. Great characters, addictive storyline and has totally left me wanting, no needing, a season 2!!!! Awesome acting by everyone involved. Just wish Anthony Hopkins was in it for a bit longer. Maybe a prequel? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Clare H I don't often post reviews but wanted to show my support for this show as I'd love more seasons. The acting is superb particularly from Iwan Rheon and Sara Martins and because of this I believe the show has the potential to be amazing. Was the first season perfect, no, there were a lot of characters and some didn't feel fleshed out enough given the season is only 10 episodes. Therefore, the deaths felt like they came a bit too soon. And the CGI quality is pretty bad for those who care about such things (I personally care more for characters and storytelling). The overall story was good, and I think could be great given a few more seasons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Tiaan D If you like ancient history this is a must see. So good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Worst ending of to a series I have ever watched…. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review James H One of the better shows Amazon has done in a long while. A lot of well known and good actors. The only issue I have with it is as someone who actually takes interest in history and has studied it, there are too many modern inputs particularly with the underlying afro-centric side of things with certain aspects which isn't at all correct to the history around Rome's provence's in NORTH Africa.
