      Critics Consensus

A disappointing melodrama focussing on the partition of India and Pakistan. Strange cross-culture casting doesn't help the pedestrian script and direction.

Audience Member I loved this film, set in what was a turbulent time in India and Pakistan's history,, They say birth is a bloody process and this birth of the nation of Pakistan was truly that. What this film demonstrates above anything is that the actions of a few should not cause bias against the masses. People should always be judged on their individual actions and not because of what other of the same race, religion or family etc, have done. I cried bucket loads especially at the end. What can I say, I love a good love story Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member What was Kreuk doing in the movie? I liked the moving plot and feel for the poor, love-stricken Sikh man who lost his life. There were many gaps in the plot but the story hit a chord within the romantic in me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Compelling story of forbidden love! Beautiful Cinematography! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review thomas a "Partition" aims to address a major world history event in the 1950s through the microcosm of story between two lovers: one in Indian Sikh man, the other a Pakistani Muslim woman. The event and the setting look fresh, but the acting and the chemistry all seem a bit odd. Nonetheless, it is always a delight watching the beautiful Indonesian Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk (who also plays Lana Lang on the TV series "Smallville") on the screen, and only her presence turns the movie into a somewhat decent watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Amazing love story. So deep and moving. There really shouldn't be any divides, why do we fight all the time? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The film industry loves to glamourise interracial romance and this movie sees American actress Neve Campbell playing an English woman and partnering a turban-clad Indian man during the political turmoil of the India-Pakistan partition of the late 1940s. Although visually striking, what could have been an interesting political drama is slow, dull, poorly written, and its characters simply fail to register any empathy from the viewer. A big disappointment. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard It is, however, watchable throughout as a document about the individual human tragedies that the advent of Partition threw up. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) If feeling alone were the benchmark of great art, Vic Sarin's film would be considerable, but the screenplay is desperately poor and the direction leaden. Rated: 2/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times The film is breathless, big-canvased and scored for big emotions: a pavilion of the heart and senses threatened only when characters open a flap to let in anachronistic dialogue or the giveaways of cross-culture casting. Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Set in the years surrounding independence in India, this slightly melodramatic film has a strong emotional kick that manages to bring both the romance and the religious-political situation vividly to life. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Matthew Turner ViewLondon In short, Partition is a watchable slice of melodrama that's worth seeing for the performances of the three leads. Rated: 3/5 Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Naman Ramachandran Total Film Sarin acts as his own DoP and the lensing is unsurprisingly ace, but he's at a loss when it comes to injecting pace and tension.
