With a narrative that moves in slow motion, Hyazgar is an endurance test of sorts, but ultimately a most rewarding ordeal for the viewer. Director Zhang Lu adopts a strictly observing perspective on events and keeps the dialogue at a mininum, and due to the innovative use of slow pan shots things seem to be happening off screen all the time. All this means lots of work but also lots of freedom for the audience. But a considerable part of the pic's appeal is also in debt to the alien but fascinating landscape of inner Mongolia, and Zhang most effectively uses the desert as a canvas to paint on. To conclude, Zhang Lu's Hyazgar, together with his fine previous effort Grain In Ear, fills a most comfortable slot in the realist cineastic canon.
