Major Ed Hardin (Edmond O'Brien), a devil-may-care fighter pilot during World War II, earns a certain begrudging admiration from his superior, Colonel Brickley (John Rodney). Brickley respects him so much, in fact, that when he gets a promotion he recommends Hardin as his replacement. In a twist, Hardin turns over a new leaf as strict taskmaster, but ends up tested himself by Captain Stu Hamilton (Robert Stack), a friend who goes against the major's rules and chooses to marry.

Audience Member Good flying sequences. I've always liked the P47. Odd to see Mustangs as 109's! Average to poor plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member An enjoyable film loaded with typical WWII-movie clichés. Directed by Raoul Walsh, the best aspect of this movie is the actual aerial combat footage that was incorporated into the flying sequences augmented by the close-ups and tracking shots that were filmed in Technicolor. A minor distraction to some might be the use of P-51 Mustangs, painted with Luftwaffe markings, as Me-109s. Along with the camera footage is a stirring background score by Max Steiner. The cast was uniformly excellent. Edmond O'Brien starred as the seat-of-the-pants flier who must amend is ways when he is promoted to commander of the squadron. Robert Stack, Tom D'Andrea, Shepperd Strudwick, and James Holden and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen from The Adventures of Superman television series) round out the squadron. We're also introduced to a one line appearance by Rock Hudson in his first film role. Sometimes predictable and pales in comparison to a similarly themed "Twelve O'clock High" but very worthwhile. . Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member the opposite of a chick flick i guess it's a guy flick and actioner Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Unoriginal and trite. Reminded me of several air force movies, all of which were better. The only interesting things were the P-47 combat scenes and the sub-plot involving the philandering sergeant.
