In "Finch," a man, a robot and a dog form an unlikely family in a powerful and moving adventure of one man's quest to ensure that his beloved canine companion will be cared for after he's gone. Tom Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. But Finch, who has been living in an underground bunker for a decade, has built a world of his own that he shares with his dog, Goodyear. He creates a robot, played by Caleb Landry Jones, to watch over Goodyear when he no longer can. As the trio embarks on a perilous journey into a desolate American West, Finch strives to show his creation, who names himself Jeff, the joy and wonder of what it means to be alive. Their road trip is paved with both challenges and humor, as it's as difficult for Finch to goad Jeff and Goodyear to get along as it is for him to manage the dangers of the new world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Finch may not be the most memorable post-apocalyptic story, but Tom Hanks proves perfectly charming company even after the collapse of civilization.

Finch is frustratingly slow, but even in its dullest moments, Tom Hanks keeps you watching.

Jason Bailey The Playlist The trouble with this kind of mix-tape moviemaking is that when your film is dominated by echoes, it's difficult to make your own voice heard. Dec 28, 2021 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Hanks does what he can with this demeaning material, because he always gives his best, but what can you do with a movie where the dog gets all the good close-ups? BC Good story, good acting (You can't go wrong with Tom Hanks and a cute dog as the stars...). I realize that this film presented a boots-on-the-ground, tactical perspective, and not a big picture view, but I wish the story would have provided a little more meat around the background of how he got to the place he was. Still, it was a very enjoyable flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/21 Full Review Phillip G I was really disappointed with this movie. I think hanks is a great actor and I can't remember a movie I've watched with him in that was this mediocre? There just wasn't enough depth, emotion or suspense in it for me. And is it me or did they copy the robot's mannerisms and voice from Brian and Charles! They made Jeff too human for me , I mean it was like a dopey teenager or something. Idk it just didn't leave me with any sort of feelings, I wouldn't watch it again? The CGI was amazing and the cinematography but that doesn't make a film. A solid compelling story, with suspense or originality does. Not a patch on terminal or castaway etc. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Jeremy W A superb performance by Tom Hanks, a sentimental robot, and most of all a dog representing unbridled love, loyalty and zest. All on a road trip across a devastated landscape. What's not to enjoy here? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Drew W I was initially hesitant to watch this one because of some of the negative reviews. But one day I got bored and decided to anyways, and I'm glad I did. It's a little gem that explores the essence of humanity. It's a simple premise with a small cast of characters, but deep in meaning and beautifully told with great acting. Don't let the negative reviews put you off. This may not be an action packed sci-fi thriller with grand or complicated ideas, but it is still an emotionally enriching experience. It's a reminder of what's really important in life. If you're into this type of movie, this one is at the very least, worthy of your time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Lee S. Weak acting in a good story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review S H I’m reviewing the reviewers. To each their own, but there are a lot of idiots not worth reading.
