In "Finch," a man, a robot and a dog form an unlikely family in a powerful and moving adventure of one man's quest to ensure that his beloved canine companion will be cared for after he's gone. Tom Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. But Finch, who has been living in an underground bunker for a decade, has built a world of his own that he shares with his dog, Goodyear. He creates a robot, played by Caleb Landry Jones, to watch over Goodyear when he no longer can. As the trio embarks on a perilous journey into a desolate American West, Finch strives to show his creation, who names himself Jeff, the joy and wonder of what it means to be alive. Their road trip is paved with both challenges and humor, as it's as difficult for Finch to goad Jeff and Goodyear to get along as it is for him to manage the dangers of the new world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Finch may not be the most memorable post-apocalyptic story, but Tom Hanks proves perfectly charming company even after the collapse of civilization.

Finch is frustratingly slow, but even in its dullest moments, Tom Hanks keeps you watching.

Jason Bailey The Playlist The trouble with this kind of mix-tape moviemaking is that when your film is dominated by echoes, it's difficult to make your own voice heard. BC Good story, good acting (You can't go wrong with Tom Hanks and a cute dog as the stars...). I realize that this film presented a boots-on-the-ground, tactical perspective, and not a big picture view, but I wish the story would have provided a little more meat around the background of how he got to the place he was. Still, it was a very enjoyable flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/21 Full Review Andy l Finch was a good movie if you like sci-fi and emotional movies you would love this. It would be the best for a chill days when you feel like relaxing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Calvin T That wasn't bad at all.....worth the watch ✌🏾 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Rosana B Um excelente filme de sobrevivência pós-apocalíptico, num futuro distópico e pouco otimista, ele, sempre ele, é protagonista do caos, Tom Hanks, contracenando com um doguinho fofo e um robozinho apaixonante, além de trágico, super divertido, se você conseguir rir das estripulias desajustadas do grupo solitário. Lindo, cativante, produção caprichosa, roteiro cuidadoso, cenários carregados de areia, destruição, abandono, fugas, correria, histórias tristes, e muita fofura entre o grupo heterogêneo. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review TI H FINCH is a post-apocalyptic road-trip that takes its good, sweet, cinematic time getting the characters from a sun-scorched St. Louis to (hopefully) sunny San Francisco. A man, two robots, and a dog--all four traveling together in an RV--put thousands of miles between them and an incoming dust storm. With a depleted ozone in the sky, they brave temperatures that pop corn while it's still on the cob, and they forever hide from a sun that sizzles human skin like bacon. ////// I'm torn. Elements of this movie along with its slow narrative pace made me use the fast-forward button on my remote control, which means I didn't fully absorb the moody atmosphere that the director was going for. Honestly, the film did drag at times. I also had difficulty believing that the characters were driving in 150-degree weather (can you survive that?). And that they hadn't starved by now. And I really had trouble believing that the tall robot, named Jeff, would have been programmed to behave the way it did. And worse of all, at every turn, the scriptwriter pawned Jeff off as cute and heartwarming, real Halmark Channel-type stuff, a man, his dog, and two robots that act like toddlers. Jeff was so adorably vulnerable that I wanted to puke. And at the same time, I found myself empathizing with him, especially during the scene where he found himself scared and alone and had to keep asking, "What am I going to do? What am I going to do?" but there's no one to help him. And good lord, my last comment: it was me discovering the reason for which the man had created Jeff the robot that finally pushed me over the edge. By the end of the film, I was sobbing like a baby. I almost choked on my own tears. Any movie with a dog in it has the ability to turn me into a nervous wreck. I can deal with gore. I can't deal with dogs in danger. Even a dog made to feel a little uncomfortable gets me flustered. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Lucas F One of my personal favourites. Finch takes you on an uncertain journey, starting off as a disaster and post apocalyptic movie, making you wonder how and why. It then shifts to lighthearted as Finch takes care of the robot and his dog. Finch makes you understand how unsafe and how unpredictable space is, and how it really is a possible reality. It makes you realise how important family and living good actually IS. A movie with a simple premise, but dives deep into morale and humanity. Watch it!
