In "Finch," a man, a robot and a dog form an unlikely family in a powerful and moving adventure of one man's quest to ensure that his beloved canine companion will be cared for after he's gone. Tom Hanks stars as Finch, a robotics engineer and one of the few survivors of a cataclysmic solar event that has left the world a wasteland. But Finch, who has been living in an underground bunker for a decade, has built a world of his own that he shares with his dog, Goodyear. He creates a robot, played by Caleb Landry Jones, to watch over Goodyear when he no longer can. As the trio embarks on a perilous journey into a desolate American West, Finch strives to show his creation, who names himself Jeff, the joy and wonder of what it means to be alive. Their road trip is paved with both challenges and humor, as it's as difficult for Finch to goad Jeff and Goodyear to get along as it is for him to manage the dangers of the new world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Finch may not be the most memorable post-apocalyptic story, but Tom Hanks proves perfectly charming company even after the collapse of civilization.

Finch is frustratingly slow, but even in its dullest moments, Tom Hanks keeps you watching.

Jason Bailey The Playlist The trouble with this kind of mix-tape moviemaking is that when your film is dominated by echoes, it's difficult to make your own voice heard. BC Good story, good acting (You can't go wrong with Tom Hanks and a cute dog as the stars...). I realize that this film presented a boots-on-the-ground, tactical perspective, and not a big picture view, but I wish the story would have provided a little more meat around the background of how he got to the place he was. Still, it was a very enjoyable flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/21 Full Review suhaas R Not just about survival — but about life and beyond. What we leave behind is how deeply we cared. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Troy R Ok Acting, nothing special. The story was good, but it focused a bit too heavily on the training of the robot. There was very little action and even the moments where there was action it was very dull and ultimately made the world feel very nonthreatening. Didn't love how crazy they made Tom Hanks' character. Like he basically was just replaying his role on Castaway but was even more irrational and less innovative. Its truly a mystery how he lived so long before Jeff. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Samir S Finch isn't a movie about saving the world; it's about getting someone else ready to live in it. In Miguel Sapochnik's story about the end of the world, Tom Hanks plays the title character, one of the last people left on Earth after it was burnt by the sun. He constructs a humanoid robot named Jeff to take care of his dog after he dies. What happens is a mix of a road movie, an elegy, and a reflection on ethics. Finch cuts survival down to its most basic human elements: trust, heritage, and care, against a dwvastated landscape. The movie makes us think about what we pass on, how we treat other people and whether empathy can be taught. The sadness and the optimism of the film rise from the thought maybe it is possible to program decency, if it is first lived with commitment. In an empty world, Finch finds calm dignity in choosing to nurture instead of rule. It's more about inheritance than the end of the world, inheritance that doesn't need a name, only caring. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Carl V the story is a disapponting view of a selfish little person who goes about creating a being upon which he can unload his one responsiblity, the dog. Finch is mean and impatient with his own created beings, even terminates one for making a mistake. He puts Jeff and the dog in danger, claims that jeff isn't able to understand 'reality' [the GG Bridge thing] and Jeff ends up facing a world alone when Finch dies. Reminds me of god and religion. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Mark C Who decided on the robot’s voice and thought his accent was reasonable. It’s jarring and spoiled this movie for me Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
