Crystal Lake's history of murder doesn't deter counselors from setting up a summer camp in the woodsy area. Superstitious locals warn against it, but the fresh-faced young people -- Jack (Kevin Bacon), Alice (Adrienne King), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) and Ned (Mark Nelson) -- pay little heed to the old-timers. Then they find themselves stalked by a brutal killer. As they're slashed, shot and stabbed, the counselors struggle to stay alive against a merciless opponent.

Critics Consensus

Rather quaint by today's standards, Friday the 13th still has its share of bloody surprises and a '70s-holdover aesthetic to slightly compel.

Kevin Maher The Times (UK) The best bits of Halloween, Carrie, and Hitchcock’s Psycho were cheekily repurposed here by the director Sean S Cunningham for a slasher movie — the first of a whopping 12 installments — that remains the genre standard-bearer. Rated: 4/5 Oct 12, 2023 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian There’s some bizarre fun in this (almost innocent) film, but maybe the fanbase are the ones to get most out of a revisit. Rated: 4/5 Oct 12, 2023 Full Review Ron Pennington The Hollywood Reporter It's blatant exploitation of the lowest order. Nov 2, 2014 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Cunningham frames some wide-angled shots perfectly and builds tension through his silence. It’s an unnerving experience and further accentuates Harry Manfredi’s brilliant score. Rated: 7/10 Jun 13, 2025 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn This is a classic that still holds up if you're a horror fan. The pacing is a bit rough and the lighting is darker than expected but it's still impressive what they were able to accomplish with the small budget they had. Rated: 3/5 Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn It's a solid slasher that is quite tame in comparison to others the followed its path; even in the 80s. The twist with the killer was classic. Rated: 3/5 Dec 13, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
