      Critics Consensus

Despite the considerable talent of its leads, Going in Style is light on laughs and plays it safe far too often.

Nadia Versari D The film isn't good but it's a fun time, it's a comedy movie you can watch with your family and even though they're old the acting from Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin is amazing Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Maani H Promissed a lot at the beginning but descended into a soft, far fetched, meaningless and predictable mishmash. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review hailee M Yeah it passed the time watched a tik tok highlight seemed interesting but when watching a movie it didn't really have my full attention Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review R 9 'Going in Style' is a fun one! I got more entertainment than I was expecting, given I had anticipated a somewhat half-arsed 90 minute comedy with potentially half-arsed showings from stars of yesteryear. Pleasantly, I was wrong. The more it went on, the move I enjoyed it. The one lame scene comes at the supermarket, but even that saves itself really with the addition of Kenan Thompson. It made me laugh at a few moments, namely with the 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' 'homage' and when Josh Pais' character does the cat thing the second time (it's barely visible, just about in shot) - both funny! The masks were a nice touch, too. And that last scene with Annabelle Chow & Nancy Sun is so dumb but I'm totally here for it. It's paced well, has a strong second half and, also, features a well done bit with John Ortiz's character in there too. A swell surprise, all in all. I would happily rewatch it. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin make for a great trio! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Similar to last Vegas. Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Originality is not the purpose of Going in Style, the kind of old-fashioned entertainment that gives old-fashioned entertainment a bad name. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 21, 2017 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian Freeman and Arkin are spot on, but it is Caine who stands out. Rated: 4/5 Apr 21, 2017 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Another of those films that pretends to show older people respect while actually treating them like comic nincompoops Rated: 2/5 Apr 12, 2017 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The delicate balance between humor and pathos that informed the original has been replaced with broader gags and more blatantly manufactured sentiment. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Paul McGuire Grimes KSTP-TV (St. Paul, MN) Purely made to get a few good chuckles out of the audience who are probably all around the same age as these characters. Will easily appeal to that demographic... Rated: 3/5 Nov 5, 2020 Full Review Leigh Monson Substream Magazine I think most casual viewers-or at least the kinds of viewers who read reviews-won't find much worth recommending here, even if they're Zach Braff fans.
