Critics Consensus

I Think We're Alone Now benefits from an absorbing aesthetic and solid work from its leads, although it's still somewhat less than the sum of its post-apocalyptic parts.

Danielle White Austin Chronicle There's a claustrophobic comfort to it... Yet there is space for silence and reflection, and many shots are quietly beautiful - until a Rush song blares, puncturing the meditative mood. Rated: 3/5 Sep 20, 2018 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning bravely face the end of the world, but they can't overcome a barrage of clichés in a plot that ties up loose ends without a single surprise or a scintilla of genuine emotion. Rated: 2/5 Sep 15, 2018 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com A story that grows frustratingly conventional. Rated: 2/4 Sep 14, 2018 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Makowsky’s script deftly explores the unique ways the lingering trauma of survivor’s guilt effects individuals and the way leaders would try to move convince the remaining population to move on without fully processing it. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Jim Rohner Battleship Pretension It's a simple film that starts out from a cynical perspective, but slowly and wonderfully reveals the beauty of letting others into your world. Apr 14, 2021 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue ... doesn't find compelling ways to explore their relationship or establish an emotional connection before a late twist sends the story down the tubes. Rik O It feels like they knew they wanted to write a story but they just didn't know what that story was. This film is aching to be a love story. The story is supposed to be something like "You don't need the love of the World if you are the World to one person" He's a jaded angry man, she's a spritely happy girl and when they have nobody else they find each other. The film doesn't do this though, it misses every opportunity it has to build on that romance. Spoiler alert... At one point she finds and gets attached to a dog, which he subsequently releases into the wild. He has callously gotten rid of something she loves and... Nothing. No conversation, no blow back, no nothing. That should have been the catalyst for some tension but they just let it go. Then later, in the third act, when they're supposed to be growing closer, the film segways into sci-fi territory with a random subplot that has nothing to do with their budding relationship. There is almost no dialogue throughout the whole film, which works in small doses, but if you're going to give the bare minimum of dialogue then it better be amazing when it arrives. Instead the sound is muffled and the dialogue is clunky. She goes to clean his parents house, which he didn't want her to find. Queue backstory or deep explanation... Nope, just bury the Mum and move on. It just never capitalises on those key scenes. Such a shame because the acting and everything else was on point. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Shioka O I like the actors but I couldn't get it. so low key I almost slept. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Jaelmac M It started out as my kind of film...like The Last Of Us, TWD etc but towards the 2nd half got a bit confusing. Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning are great, but it kinda lost me unfortunately. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Sarfaraz A This post-apocalyptic film, directed by Reed Morano and starring Peter Dinklage, Elle Fanning and Paul Giamatti, tells the story of a lonely survivor (Peter) in a little town filled with decaying corpses of people who one day meets an injured young lady who offers him hope of overcoming loneliness. The main actors deliver strong performances in the film. Even when there isn't much to learn about the source of the outbreak or what triggered it, the tale keeps you engaged. It is only near the end that viewers begin to learn some peculiar answers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/25 Full Review Alex T Yup. They work. This works. And Paul is never in a film unworthy of a view. Elle and Peter are just magic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review John K At the end, I was still trying to figure out what happened; I guess the director felt it was best left up to the audience. I was expecting more and was disappointed that there wasn't. Not bad, but definitely room for improvement. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
