Critics Consensus

Lady Macbeth flashes some surprising toughness beneath its period exterior, bolstered by a mesmerizing -- and unforgiving -- central performance by Florence Pugh.

Jelisije J I get the themes and messages this film wanted to portray and even with an excellent lead this film story has little to no substance......You are better off watching instead "In Secret" with Elizabeth Olsen if you want a similar story with the same theme and messages. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Alain E A period drama where chronological placement plays an insignificant role. Pugh is magnificent as a repressed and neglected wife who gradually realizes that she can control the conditions of her existence and actually eliminate any opposition. In the final scene she ends alone, but she is still young and there is ample time for a second and third act. There are also some hints that she may be pregnant, but this never develops. This is a story that is not concerned about right and wrong. The heroine has certain needs and she is out to obtain satisfaction. There is no frontal nudity, but the film earns its R rating based on its complete disregard of any ethical standards. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Tom M Anchored by an amazing Central performance from Pugh, this is not a tale you know where it will go. Sparse, cruel and explicit.. don't put this baby in the corner! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review alan g Not Shakespeare. You already know how it ends so why watch. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Victor O Florence Pugh has been developing into a great actress, so this movie caught my eye. With a title like Lady MacBeth, I was expecting Shakespeare, so I decided to check it out. Katherine has married into a respectable English family but it’s becoming increasingly clear that she is bored with this arraigned marriage that leaves her unhappy as her spouse finds her attractive but unloved. So, as he leaves on business, she gets to know the land and the people and begins an affair with a laborer who becomes less discrete because she cares about nothing but her happiness. Such selfishness leads to a wickedness that leads to murder and scandal. This was amazing. A dark, tragic tale of an evil, selfish woman who gets away with many awful things told in the backdrop of an era that didn’t regard a woman as an equal to a man but that is no excuse to do awful things. There is so much about this that is so well told and can see how great a story this can be but making no mistake it’s not a rewatchable one. Great acting, but too tragic to watch again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Lynne B brilliantly done and atmospheric but gross motivation made it not credible and unwatchable Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
