Critics Consensus

Lady Macbeth flashes some surprising toughness beneath its period exterior, bolstered by a mesmerizing -- and unforgiving -- central performance by Florence Pugh.

alan g Not Shakespeare. You already know how it ends so why watch. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Victor O Florence Pugh has been developing into a great actress, so this movie caught my eye. With a title like Lady MacBeth, I was expecting Shakespeare, so I decided to check it out. Katherine has married into a respectable English family but it’s becoming increasingly clear that she is bored with this arraigned marriage that leaves her unhappy as her spouse finds her attractive but unloved. So, as he leaves on business, she gets to know the land and the people and begins an affair with a laborer who becomes less discrete because she cares about nothing but her happiness. Such selfishness leads to a wickedness that leads to murder and scandal. This was amazing. A dark, tragic tale of an evil, selfish woman who gets away with many awful things told in the backdrop of an era that didn’t regard a woman as an equal to a man but that is no excuse to do awful things. There is so much about this that is so well told and can see how great a story this can be but making no mistake it’s not a rewatchable one. Great acting, but too tragic to watch again. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Lynne B brilliantly done and atmospheric but gross motivation made it not credible and unwatchable Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Christopher S Florence Pugh turned a performance for the ages! I only just saw this film recently and I would put it as one of the better performances I have seen in the last year or two, easy. She played that role with such complexity, I couldn't help but to find myself sympathizing with her; helplessly drawn into her twisted plot, until it was too late to turn back. Shot in mostly long takes, the director and editor really gave Florence Pugh freedom deliver the performance she wanted, and the movie is the all better for it. Lady Macbeth delivered on stellar excellent character development, top notch costume design, same too were the production design and art direction. I also wouldn't be surprised if it was mostly shot on locations, because so many of those sets were unmistakably real. In total, just top marks all the way around. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/24 Full Review Jackie H This film was a brilliant exercise in character development and execution ... Well done! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Regina P I had been hearing about this film for some time. Glad to finally catch it. This was really interesting. I'm so confused here, because I want to call every single character except the maid the bad guy. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
