Lightningface is a film about trauma. Basil, played by Oscar Isaac, is the recipient of a lightning bolt to the face that leaves a scar. How Basil copes with this event is the crux of the film. We see him slowly, often hilariously, deteriorate as he severs his ties to the world and searches for meaning in nature documentaries, Native American culture, and many other things - all while stewing in his apartment.
While the final minutes may seem perplexing, or even hopeful, it is important to remember the theme of "everything" that bookends this short. Can we ever truly understand and come to terms with our suffering, or will it ultimately destroy us? I find the use of the term "origin story" to be disingenuous. It may only be applied in the broadest sense. The final scene means something very different when you consider the toll that trauma can take on a person.
I was happy to discover this short film after seeing that is won Grand Prize at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Isaac is superb as the troubled, yet likeable Basil. At 20 minutes in length, I highly recommend checking out this surprisingly deep short film. It has something for the monkey in all of us.
