Imaginatively evoking the inner landscape of human beings longing to connect, to love and feel loved, the film is a parable of happiness gloriously found and tragically lost. "Requiem for a Dream" tells parallel stories that are linked by the relationship between the lonely, widowed Sara Goldfarb and her sweet but aimless son, Harry. The plump Sara, galvanized by the prospect of appearing on a TV game show, has started on a dangerous diet regimen to beautify herself for a national audience.

Though the movie may be too intense for some to stomach, the wonderful performances and the bleak imagery are hard to forget.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online At times disturbing and always intense, this flick offers its own acid trip for viewers and is a first-hand look at four people who become trapped by their own hell. Rated: A Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Lisa Alspector Chicago Reader A staccato narrative parallels the experiences and hallucinations of a woman on drugs with those of her son and his friends. Sep 20, 2011 Full Review Matt Noller Slant Magazine A gut-wrenching, formally adventurous masterpiece or an ugly, flashy piece of empty-headed propaganda? Rated: 2/4 Sep 8, 2009 Full Review Kristy Strouse Cinematic Lovelies I think it’s a masterpiece; gut-wrenching and soaked in a hellscape of realistic proportions. Requiem for a Dream is a tough watch, but an essential one. Mar 12, 2023 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault If anything, Aronofsky’s doomy, freaky, humorless style defeats his own purpose: It re-animates the dark romance of dissolution. Rated: C- Sep 3, 2022 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound Though all aspects of the film are excellent from story to cinematography to directing it is the acting which holds the whole thing together. The three leads are amazing. Rated: 4/5 Sep 14, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Julian S Raw and intense, the film’s emotional weight comes through in Burstyn’s portrayal of a widower trapped in the past, descending into madness over a reality that is always out of reach. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Mark A boring waste of time i dont recommend Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review nahnis 1 God damn... this was one of the best films ive ever seen! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Garrett B It’s a dark, gritty, and sometimes sad presentation of the side effects of drugs Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Audience Member I know it’s a very popular film, and I understand why so many people like it but I just don’t. It’s upsetting because I almost feel as if I didn’t give it a chance. I may return to this one in the future just to see my take on it then, but for now I didn’t care for it. The lady that played Sara Goldfarb gave a magnificent (and I’m not using that term lightly) performance. During her scenes I felt disturbed in a way that could only be described as… cringe? But it wasn’t cringe it was just shocking. Only Saving Private Ryan has gotten that kind of reaction out of me before I saw this. So that tells me I need to rewatch this film some time soon, I think I’ll really enjoy it. Seeing Marlon Wayans in a movie other than scary movie (or just a comedy in general) made me laugh. That’s not to say he didn’t do a good job though, because he definitely did. Jennifer Connelly was just ok, and Jared Leto was decent. 2/5 stars. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Eve W this movie is gut wrenching and phenomenal. i’ve never not been able to breathe at the end of a movie because of how off putting it was but the last 20 minutes leading up to it was one of the if not the best ending scene of a movie.
