Audience Member Riff-Raff is a film that didn't particularly knock my socks off in any technical way, but still somehow achieved its own sort of excellence. It doesn't seem like your conventional movie, but rather, like a vignette of the life of its main characters. It feels more real than almost any other film I've seen, possibly a byproduct of its screenwriter being an actual construction worker. The film it pulls you in and makes the characters feel like old friends, without a particularly exciting or thrilling plot, in a way it reminds me of Chekhov. And though the characters have their ups and downs, the movie presents quite a few chuckles. A thoroughly intelligent and genuine film, brimming with social commentary without bashing you over the head with it. 97/100 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Mid-era Ken Loach flick with Robert Carlyle known from "The Full Monty" in the lead. He is taking jobs as he can, earning a few quid just o make it go round. he has some noce coworkers as pals, but they come and go often so there is nothing permanent. Little is permanent in his life in general, accept bad jobs and a living in a mess. Good acting and some nice characters - a shame the coolest one dropped out of the film half way in. It's a drama comedy - and well balanced on that matter. The topic is very Loach, the film is very Loach. I found it pretty good, but some solutions and turns end up in ways I don't like and I kind of felt few thing where in place when it ended. 6 out of 10 construction sites. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant performance by Carlyle in his first film lead. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Another wonderful slice of working class life from Ken Loach. This time it is centered around a building site in North London. Some really funny scenes, notably... Ricky Tomlinson's venture onto the fourth floor and the mobile phone call. Anyone who worked a dead end job can relate to this flick and Karl Marx himself could have written the script. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Frances H An interesting film that really shows what happens to the working class when they have no unions--summary dismissals, low pay and unsafe working conditions. However, the opposite is union corruption and pay and benefits so over priced that the work goes elsewhere. There is no easy solution. This film does make one more aware of the plight of the lower part of the working class existing on the edge of society and their lack of job security. Although supposed to be a comedy and a drama, except for the scattering of the ashes, I found very little that was the comedy part. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/13 Full Review Audience Member Riff-Raff is a social commentary about unsafe working conditions that effectively shows how it affects the workers and how far they will go to combat it.
