Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the Queen's Sandringham Estate. There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different. SPENCER is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spencer can frustrate with its idiosyncratic depiction of its subject's life, but Kristen Stewart's finely modulated performance anchors the film's flights of fancy.

Audience Says

Kristen Stewart is great in Spencer, but viewers expecting a traditional -- or even clear -- picture of Diana's life are likely to come away disappointed.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk If this is a ‘fable from a true tragedy’, the way Larrain harnesses that tragedy ends up being just another way to define Diana as a victim. Rated: 3/5 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald In a breathless, headlong way, Stewart does a credible job, but she’s perched on the edge of hysteria throughout and the upbeat ending fails to alter the impression that she and Larraín have delivered a one-dimensional portrait of a victim. Rated: 3/5 Jan 19, 2022 Full Review Jason Bailey Crooked Marquee Stewart was an unlikely but, it's now clear, ingenious choice for the role; she's going through such a period of pronounced anguish that the wrong kind of actor would have played the whole thing as overwrought, and ruined it. Dec 28, 2021 Full Review Francesca Steele iNews.co.uk Pablo Larraín's film portrays a frenzied, haunted woman disintegrating before our eyes - it is a mesmerising triumph. Rated: 5/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Puesta en Escena (AR) The protagonist is Diana Spencer like her life, this story does not represent a traditional biopic. The proposal of this “fable of a real tragedy” is to unmask that idyllically called “fairy tale” whose paradigm changed from Diana's experience... Rated: 9/10 Aug 18, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League Stewart’s performance is a staggering one that does so much more than merely replicate the looks and mannerisms of her historical icon. Tony C Kristen Stewart's transformation becoming Princess Diana is remarkably convincing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/22 Full Review David H First of all, I couldn't understand much of the dialogue. Yes, I have a slight hearing problem, but seriously...there were times I was convinced they were speaking a foreign language. I don't know how much fact there was in this movie...we know Diana was depressed and had bulimia, but I left the theater a little depressed myself and headed for a good Tex-Mex meal with more than one margarita. I had a lot of respect for Diana during her years in the palace and felt she was dealt a raw deal by the royal family, but when the end of this movie FINALLY came, I really didn't care any more. She deserves to be remembered in a more caring manner. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/16/21 Full Review James M W A bit slow nor sure what the overall "message" was - if there was one! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/12/21 Full Review nicholas s IT WENT NOWHERE. It painted a completely different picture of Diana. Was it based on fact or just out and out vengeance towards Diana? Save your time and money and by a good book Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/12/21 Full Review Bogdana I loved Kristen Stewart in this movie. It shows the fragile mental state of Diana during the Christmas holiday with the royal family. The movie is more on the artistic site. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/11/21 Full Review Kim I enjoyed the movie and the acting was wonderful! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/09/21 Full Review Read all reviews
