Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Squanto is the kind of superficial, tidied-up, idealized history that might appeal to younger viewers. No thoughtful person will be able to take it seriously. Dale R Based on the true story of a Native American who was captured by Europeans and brought to Europe. Parts of this film were slow and non-engaging. There was also a tone problem between character portrayals that confused who the movie was targeting as an audience. While Adam Beach did alright in the lead role, his and the rest of the cast did not stand out in their acting. The basic plot lines in the movie are accurate to the real life person, but with the tone changes it is hard to consider this anything more than Hollywood fluff. If you're curious about early interactions between Europe and America, then check it out. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Liam D An standard Adventure Biopic but it's an interesting entry into Disney's live action division Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/22 Full Review robert m Telling the Plymouth Colony story becomes more difficult every year. Americans are divided on Thanksgiving Day. This movie adds to the confusion. The real Squanto was subtle and complex. The English settlers and the Native Americans depended on Squanto but there were moments when they didn't trust him. What's needed is a major motion picture that's honest when trying to explain Plymouth. It won't be easy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review r 9 Not as wholesome or empowering as I think Disney wanted it to be, but there is at least some warmth to the message that it portrays. It's based on the real life Squanto, though apparently takes a load of liberties with his story. I'd expect nothing less truth be told, the point of a film - in my opinion, at least - is to make a good film - therefore truth, which most of the time is more dull, takes a backseat. I'm not saying it's impossible to mix accuracy and entertainment, but I never expect both myself. Documentaries are for accuracy, after all. Cast-wise, I can't say any of them properly stand out. Adam Beach (Squanto) and Mandy Patinkin (Daniel) would be my picks, while Michael Gambon (George) is fairly good I guess. Like most other areas of the film, it is quite average. I didn't find 'Squanto: A Warrior's Tale' slow paced and I do appreciate the message, it's just not crafted together all that well. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Adam Beach of 'Law & Order: SVU' fame stars in one of his earliest roles as one of the most famous Native Americans despite the movie's events being historically inaccurate yet Beach plays the character with great amount of strength, heart, depth, and bravery Sir George is also played by a young Michael Gambon (pre-Harry Potter fame) Squanto lives in his village and is married to his love, Nakooma things change however when the English during the Mayflower voyage sail into their land in the late 1600's what seems like a friendly invitation aboard to the new world turns into an unexpected betrayal as the English capture and enslave the natives for Sir King George to profit off of them, Squanto is then separated from his homeland and beloved it's a strange land Squanto finds himself in as he's sold, put on for a circus display with a bear, and finds refuge in a monastery the monks take him in and teach their values and customs yet all Squanto wants is to go home Sir George is only interested in exploiting Squanto seeing him and his people as nothing but blood thirsty savages feeling far superior he believes a natural order only exists; god, then angels then kings, then human beings in Squanto's case Sir George only sees him as livestock it doesn't matter if you're from the new world or the one you were born into, we are all human beings, it's much better to learn about another culture than to make enemies, hatred only leads to more hatred, some people in this world use bullying or force to get what they want, if war is the last resort do we just keep killing one another until we're nothing but bones and ashes, we may speak different tongues, have different customs but there is only 1 moon as well as 1 sun that everyone can share together a watchable Disney film almost along the lines of Pocahontas but of course it's understandable to nitpick it for its lack of actual detail from the history books but take it for what it's worth Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting take on Squanto that's great for history class.
