What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite flashy sets and special effects, Super Mario Bros. is too light on story and substance to be anything more than a novelty.

Adrián Álvarez Espinof I prefer a film that takes risks over inane projects. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 14, 2019 Full Review Mark Caro Chicago Tribune Like their video-game counterparts, co-stars Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo somehow manage to weave their way past threatening obstacles and escape with their dignity. Rated: 2/4 Apr 17, 2019 Full Review Carrie Rickey Philadelphia Inquirer Scenery rushes by, noise blares, characters pop up wearing new costumes that they couldn't possibly have had time to change into as they eluded their adversaries. Rated: 1.5/4 May 30, 2013 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ...Super Mario Brothers is an origin story, but adds so much detail that any joy of seeing Mario fly is negated by heavy plotting and far too much time spent watching Hopper/Koopa chew the scenery... Rated: 3/5 Jun 21, 2021 Full Review Zaki Hasan IGN Movies Although the theatrical release is perhaps too narratively disjointed and tonally dissonant to qualify as 'good,' it so proudly brandishes its bonkers, go-for-broke aesthetic, one hesitates to label it entirely 'bad' either. Jun 15, 2021 Full Review Charles Pulliam-Moore io9.com Hoskins and Leguizamo... are able to sell themselves as the plumbers in large part because of the obvious fact that they both understood the movie was only taking itself but so seriously. Frank J The set design and practical effects were great. Really should have won an award for that Yoshi Animatronic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Bo F This movie is the worst movie ever I can't even recommend this destroys people's love for Mario my rating for this movie is If u even give it a 1/10 you're being too nice -100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 and above/10 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Josh A This is an... interesting movie, to say the least. It's entertaining at times, sure. And it's really cool when Mario and Luigi finally put their suits on. But also... what the hell did I just watch? To start with, this doesn't remotely feel like Mario. The characters aren't the same, Mario and Luigi barely wear green and red, Princess Peach isn't in this one but Daisy is meant to be Peach, even though they don't make her wear orange, and Bowser is a dinosaur who evolved into a human. This is like the Mario equivalent of the Blade movies, where they tried to make everything grounded, cool and gritty. However, there are some positives to this movie. While Mario and Luigi barely wear their colours, when they do, it's really cool. And the little references to the actual game series are cool when they're there. Finally, the climax is the best part of the movie. Aside from the Super Koopa Cousins. I wish that game existed. Overall, it's a very weird experience to say the least. Wouldn't recommend but at the same time, if you want to see a really weird take on Mario, I would recommend this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Tom T I can’t believe I forgot about that hot Mario seduction scene. Mad respect for Daisy barely batting a lash at her long lost father being a giant bomb producing fungus. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Toad S Anyone who doesn't absolutely love this movie is stupid and has terrible taste in art. Yes, this means you. This is an impossible movie that turns an IP still in its infancy into one of the most impressive displays of practical special effects, a story that calls truth to power, and will remain a love letter not only to the game, but also brooklyn, new york, and italian-american heritage. These are elements that have since been all but stripped from the modern, gentrified mario. Seriously, if you don't like this movie, I would really really take a deep look inside of yourself and ask yourself why you're such an un-fun terrible piece of crap. This is a rock and roll thrill ride for anyone who loves fun and misses an era where movies took chances. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Nick R Disastrously bad and nothing at all like the games. This movie isn't even a movie, it's just a bad fever dream.
