What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite flashy sets and special effects, Super Mario Bros. is too light on story and substance to be anything more than a novelty.

I prefer a film that takes risks over inane projects. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Like their video-game counterparts, co-stars Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo somehow manage to weave their way past threatening obstacles and escape with their dignity. Go to Full Review

Scenery rushes by, noise blares, characters pop up wearing new costumes that they couldn't possibly have had time to change into as they eluded their adversaries. Go to Full Review

...Super Mario Brothers is an origin story, but adds so much detail that any joy of seeing Mario fly is negated by heavy plotting and far too much time spent watching Hopper/Koopa chew the scenery... Go to Full Review

Although the theatrical release is perhaps too narratively disjointed and tonally dissonant to qualify as 'good,' it so proudly brandishes its bonkers, go-for-broke aesthetic, one hesitates to label it entirely 'bad' either. Go to Full Review

Hoskins and Leguizamo... are able to sell themselves as the plumbers in large part because of the obvious fact that they both understood the movie was only taking itself but so seriously. Go to Full Review

Jay P 5d Fantastic. I don't care what anyone says. It's better than the cartoon crap they had made recently See more Max P Nov 24 A "so bad it's good" type movie. Bears no resemblance to the Nintendo's Mario Bros. series, in any form. Goombas look ugly as hell, and a lot of other very weird events happen. See more Jacob T Oct 28 It's a fairly harmless film on it's own but I have one question - as a fanatic of the franchise - what does this have to do with Mario? I respect that the Mario World wasn't all that fleshed out at the time but... man, Mario and Luigi looking like father and son instead of brothers, Bowser being a... human with a lizard tongue??? And the main fuel of 6-year-old me's hatred for this movie... THOSE GOOMBAS... And, from a general movie point of view, it just screams middle aged Hollywood writers trying to be all "fresh" and "radical" as was done frequently during the 90s but failing horrendously and making what many consider to be one of, if not THE worst video game inspired movie ever. If you have time to spend and/or hate yourself THAT much, feel free to give this one a watch. If otherwise, don't bother. See more Rafael S Oct 23 Trash movie, how did they approve this movie? See more Jason H Oct 13 One of the worst movies I have ever seen in a theater. I took my younger brother, and he hated it, too. See more Colton A Oct 9 Greatest movie of all time See more Read all reviews
