Audience Member C. Thomas Howell is an LA cop recruited into an organization that assassinates criminals. When he becomes dissatisfied, he finds that he can't just walk away. This by-the-numbers straight-to-video action flick is not very interesting, but has really outrageous action sequences with some incredible stunt work. There's an opening car chase down a pier where the cars seem to run into every bystander. There's a chase on the freeway with exploding acetylene tanks taking out all the cars. C. Thomas Howell and a burning man take a header out a window and fall 6 stories into a parked car. Amazing stuff. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member If "stunt" was its own separate genre of film, "The Sweeper" (1996) would be canon. Maybe in the distant future when everybody is in virtual reality all the time and life is just a computer-generated fantasy, they'll look back at stunt work and call it barbaric savagery. Until then, we'll be allowed to enjoy films like this one. This b-grade is top-notch, 11/10, and it's quite obviously a labour of love. Not only are the stunts quite memorable, and the pyrotechnics and other practical effects rather stunning, the camera work is phenomenal. Amazing dolly shots, crane shots, trailer shots, and even aerial shots, punctuated with truly smooth hand held shots like nobody does any more. Great lighting, great outdoors filming, amazing work. A really interesting score and all the sound is beautifully equalized and mixed. The acting is really good, too. The dialogue and story are just slightly better than what I expect from "a-grade" action fare, and the actors and actresses deliver their lines with relish. It's also really pleasant to see so many powerful female characters, and several women on the top of the credits. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting premise but not a compelling execution by a leading man that lacks punch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member this movie sucks don't bother Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good movie and full of intensity, but this one just doesn't stand out enough to go crazy about. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I remember this one! I was, what fourteen, and even then I noticed that the plot was paper-thin. But the car chases were great, and they are the reason I give two and a half stars instead of one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
