What to Know

Critics Consensus

The BFG minimizes the darker elements of Roald Dahl's classic in favor of a resolutely good-natured, visually stunning, and largely successful family-friendly adventure.

Danny Leigh Financial Times Visually, though, the film can be gorgeous. Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2016 Full Review Michael Koresky Film Comment Magazine When put into self-consciously cinematic form, The BFG becomes too big, too friendly, and too giant, in its rollicking gambols, patronizing slapstick, and certainly in its swelling sentimentality. Sep 6, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The BFG is a delightful fantasy, one all associated with the film should be proud of, the end result an enchanting journey of resilience and imagination the likes of which dreams are born from. Ava V Amazing movie! Definitely watch with family! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review TROY S It's close encounters of the large and absurd kind as Spielberg does a good job of adapting this children's classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Pillow R Was mid. I prefer to watch shrek Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Koko melon P I got a mini book of this slay Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Dale R Based on the book by Roald Dahl and directed by Stephen Spielberg, this film is about a 10-year-old girl who is taken away by a giant to Giant Country. Ruby Barnhill plays the girl, named Sophie, and does a good job considering she is in most scenes by herself. Mark Rylance voices the BFG and also does well. The take on the BFG speech was a plot point, but a lot of the times he was confusing to listen to or needed translating from Sophie. The computer graphics are good, though the lighting seemed off in certain parts and the giants look a bit too cartoony for me. This film is targeting younger children and I often gage these movies by how long it takes to get to the first “fart joke”. This film took 35 minutes, which isn’t a great score. This leads me to believe that the writing of the film is not very good. There were a couple scenes that I felt didn’t get across what they were going for. This is not a bad film, and the target audience may enjoy it. Check it out if you are curious. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Ryland C What the hell? Um….. why did they make this film so….. ugly and weird and gross. I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t feel like something Spielberg would make. I’m sorry but I just don’t want to think about this nightmare ever again. Big friendly giant my asshole. More like Big freakish GAG. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
