Audience Member "The Last of Robin Hood" is the true story of Beverly Aadland, a teen starlet who became the last girlfriend of legendary swashbuckler Errol Flynn. In 1957, Beverly was working at Warner Brothers studios with a fake birth certificate saying she was 18 -- she was in fact, only 15 -- when she encountered the former matinée idol. After a bumpy start, the two undertook a relationship that was ultimately embraced by Beverly's Hollywood mother Florence, who became a willing third wheel. The affair took them from L.A. to New York to Africa, then to Cuba where Flynn pitched in with the rebels to make a pro-Castro propaganda movie starring Beverly. It all came crashing to an end in Vancouver, however, when Flynn died in Beverly's arms, causing an avalanche of publicity; Florence finally achieved the attention she sought in the form of tabloid notoriety but the chaos drove Beverly to the edge of sanity. Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads "Kevin Kline's performance is spot on, but in every other respect, The Last of Robin Hood disappoints." Dakota Fanning was called miscast by several critics. "The Last of Robin Hood" is a so so dark coming-of-age tale following Errol Flynn during his last years, with other words not the golden years in Hollywood. It´s an independent production and it shows if you ask me. We get ok performances from Susan Sarandon and Kevin Kline who does strike some resemblance with the real Errol Flynn. However, the storyline based on the relation between Flynn and Aadland is not that intriguing on my book. As Errol was a true Hollywood star back in the days with movies such as "Captain Blood" (1935), "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1936), "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), "The Sea Hawk" (1940) and "They Died with their Boots On" (1941) under his belt, I would´ve wanted to see more of Flynn´s life and his films during the heydays. The film doesn´t really manage to catch the vibe of the 50s either in a proper way and yes I do agree that Dakota Fanning is miscast in the role of Beverly Aadland. No need to see "The Last of Robin Hood". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review kevin w While there's indeed a story here, or two, or three, none of them get adequate inspection: 1) the loneliness of a popular star gone old, 2) the loneliness of youngster ignored all of her life, or 3) the loneliness of that youngster's mom, ignoring her child in a grasping attempt to grab fame. Any of these is an analysis of our fame obsessed society waiting to happen, but the source material is glossed over here even while hinted at. All of the main actors deliver the goods, but there's not enough material given them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Kevin Kline was born to play the dashing, charismatic Errol Flynn but the film itself is a very meagre, inconsequential affair. I was disengaged with the mother-daughter conflict, especially after Errol dropped dead with another half an hour to spare.
