The C.I.A., who hired Kesey to be a patient in their studies about the mind altering drug LSD,(he needed money during college) and you have quite a eye opening look into the mid to late 1960's craze which influenced The Beatles and was specifically championed by The Greatful Dead, a west coast band who's guitar member Jerry Garcia

made no excuses for applauding the use of the forbidden "acid". His early band was a regular at Kesey's "meetings".
See this if you want to know more of the sixties anti-materialism movement that had The Greatful Dead band as an early follower of Ken Kesey's/Leary's ideas about free thought, freedom of expression fueled by LSD, ie acid.
Leary predicted that the Internet was the LSD of the future, that computers would be in every school. He became very interested in cyberspace.

and mother followers of west coast Ken Kesey, details the life of ex-Harvard professor Tim Leary (the only Harvard professor besides Ralph Waldo Emerson to be fired from Harvard). His "mind exploring" interests, prompted by no less than the C.I.A. (who were then avid researchers into LSD).
QUOTES from Leary:
1 "People use the word "natural" ... What is natural to me is these botanical species which interact directly with the nervous system. What I consider artificial is 4 years at Harvard, and the Bible, and Saint Patrick's cathedral, and the sunday school teachings." ---- Tim Leary from
LSD: Methods of Control (1966)
2 "You're only as young as the last time you changed your mind."
3 " I am 100 percent in favor of the intelligent use of drugs, and 1,000 percent against the thoughtless use of them, whether caffeine or LSD. And drugs are not central to my life."
Chaos and Cyber Culture (1994)
4 We are dealing with the best-educated generation in history. They are a hundred times better educated than their grandparents, and ten times more sophisticated. There has never been such an open-minded group. The problem is that no one is giving them anything fresh. They've got a brain dressed up with nowhere to go.----

5 "Drop Out" meant self-reliance, a discovery of one's singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean "Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity." -- Leary

was the only Harvard professor to be dismissed by the school in a hundred years. The other was poet Ralph Waldo Emerson.
3 Timothy Leary was a West Point cadet who really chaffed at the regimented thinking demanded by the academy. He advised everyone to think for yourself above all else and after much consideration decide to obey authority or better, question it.
4 Leary died of cancer but felt he was on the mind's last great journey.

5 "We always have urged people: Don't take LSD unless you are very well prepared, unless you are specifically prepared to go out of your mind. Don't take it unless you have someone that's very experienced with you to guide you through it. And don't take it unless you are ready to have your perspective on yourself and your life radically changed, because you're gonna be a different person, and you should be ready to face this possibility." ---- Leary,
