Variety Staff Variety Peter Hyams' debut production is handsomely mounted, but his screenplay is sterile, superficial and inconsistent. Oct 13, 2018 Full Review Jay Cocks TIME Magazine Peter Boyle, as the salesman, and James Caan, as the swine, do the best they can, which is extremely well indeed, but the movie's clumsy feints at sophistication and its grotesque sentimentality prevail. Oct 13, 2018 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times T. R. Baskin is never at a loss for words, most of which sound as if they had come straight from the notebook of a writer who spent most of time jotting down funny lines without ever worrying much about character. Oct 13, 2018 Full Review TV Guide Staff TV Guide Although she raises some interesting questions, Bergen's character evokes neither the sympathy nor the interest intended. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 13, 2018 Full Review Tony Mastroianni Cleveland Press The movie has a story that goes nowhere. It bogs down in trifles and seldom gets away from the tons of trivia. Audience Member The professional critics totally missed the mark (and clearly the point). Maybe because they're all men. TR Baskin has remained on my list of top 10 movies since 1971. I don't know why they changed the name for UK & worldwide release. Perhaps because they wouldn't know Thelma Ritter? I'd like to give 2 long overdue thumbs up to Herbert Ross (posthumously) for directing this awesome movie and a long overdue shout out to Candace Bergen, as well as James Caan and Peter Boyle (posthumously) for playing the "heavies". They all should have won academy awards or, at the very least, nominations for their respective contributions. If that had occurred, TR Baskin would have had a better box office draw.
