Anton Bitel Little White Lies ...capture[s] the live-fast-die-young spirit of a vibrant coming-of-age indie which keeps sticking its rebellious finger up to the values of Hong Kong's adults while literally dancing over their graves. Sep 21, 2020 Full Review Pat Brown Slant Magazine Fruit Chan's quirky, gangster-adjacent flick, so infused with washed-out and blue-filtered imagery, presents a portrait of Hong Kong that bears more than a passing resemblance to Wong Kar-wai and Christopher Doyle's early collaborations. Luca D After reading all the reviews I was honestly excited to watch this movie and was let down. I get it's an low budget independent film but I feel like that's an excuse. Objectively it is a low quality film in terms of story and character development. The cinematography was pretty good and the filming locations definitely gave the crew an upper hand. I feel like shooting hong kong on film is always going to look cool and cinematic. So other than the cool filming locations and some cool outfits the characters wear it's not really worth watching. The characters and acting are super flat. Nobody really develops. spoiler alert everyone dies and nothing really is explained. Seems like they had some leftover film reels and wrote a script in a week then went out on the streets and filmed. Definitely not anywhere near the 80%-100% ratings that it receives. If you want to watch a Hong Kongese movie that's actually moving just watch a Wong Kar Wai movie and don't waste ur time with this budget reproduction. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Audience Member I saw this film had a great IMDB-rating, and hidden Asian films often turns out as pure gold. Well, this one did not. I may have picked the wrong day as I failed getting into it, but it surely never made it easy. Some looser thug gang are out and about. I'm not sure what they are up to, really, but there are some shootings and threathening here. Some girl with short hair and a disease, a reatard and a wannbe thug are the main people here - especially the thug as he walks around in weird clothes and deals with stuff. Stuff that I never care much for, but for him it seems important. It's a crime comedy, but it gave me zero laughs. It's done almost without budget and the director worked hard to make the film happen. It does not look good, but the editing is not that bad and I can deal with the violence effects and tricks that never seem too real. It tries hard, but never really shine. I must admit that I easily could have missed 15 minutes of it without noticing, as I found it almost impossible to hang on too. It's not that messy, but the non-funny, half-amature presentation of a low life crook did not apply to me. 3 out of 10 Virtua Cop 2-games. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member an interesting teenage gangster flick that was fruit chan's debut, shot on film reel ends he had collected to save costs. amateur actors do a good job here, especially sam lee, who's since made a career in hong kong based films. he projects a dangerous charm and sense of humor in what could have been an unrelievedly grim watch Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Niente male questo, bisogna approfondire la filmografia di Fruit Chan Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Hong Kong ganster film by first time director. Autumn Moon is a young debt-collecting low-level triad member in a city full of them. Half insensitive volatile youth, half thoughtful teenager he argues with his mother, protects his slow friend, hangs out with a neighbouring girl, threatens debtors with his gun and generally muddles along in that way that people do when they don't know where they're going but hope they get there someday anyway. It's a low budget film but it doesn't show, because there's so much freshness and life in it. HIghly recommended for those who like their teenage gangster films with a mix of tenderness and toughness. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Filmed with a tight budget on leftover film stock, Made In Hong Kong might just be one of the greatest films about Hong Kong ever, inspiring a host of local filmmakers to voice their cultural identity when threatened to be replaced by the muddled concept of a universal "Chineseness". Building on the popularity of the kitschy Young & Dangerous series, director Fruit Chan expands the sociological universe of the gangster genre to include a serious attempt at portraying Hong Kong's lower classes, and especially it's young. Even though the imminent 1997 handover event remains largely absent in the young protagonists lives, it's presence is still noted in their constant and morbid obsession with death, and in a devastatingly ironic ending in which Hong Kong's utopian future is quietly questioned. Also, Chan has a very personal expressionistic cinematic style that fits the incredibly screen present Sam Lee like a glove. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
