What to Know

Critics Consensus

Distinguished by the ineffable star power of Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, 1923 is another solid if unrelentingly grim addition to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe.

Nick Schager The Daily Beast Another capable notch in the writer/director’s belt, albeit one that’s too conservative—narratively speaking—for its own good. Jan 30, 2023 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian There are many ideas, themes and storylines, piling up quickly and not always convincingly integrated. It hardly matters at this stage, the whole shebang is wonderfully cinematic and romantically entertaining. Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Michael Idato Sydney Morning Herald 1923 is brilliant. Taylor Sheridan’s writing is so taut it feels like the tension could snap at any moment, and Ben Richardson’s crisp and economic direction suits the weary, almost sullen mood. Rated: 4/5 Dec 23, 2022 Full Review Ed Power Irish Times ...a well-put-together drama that runs aground on Mirren’s baffling attempt to sound like a Victorian musical-hall caricature of an Irish person. Jul 2, 2025 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex With exciting adventures and strong performances, 1923 is a step up for Sheridan. Rated: 7/10 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Paula Vázquez Prieto La Nación (Argentina) 1923 evidences Sheridan's effective narrative pulse... and above all, the exploration of the strength of its stars at the helm of a story that seeks the epic in the same way that its protagonists yearn for survival. James M The critics must have been watching a different show. I really enjoyed both Yellowstone and 1988. Great storylines and script, decent acting. I only got through 3 episodes of this. Too many disjointed “right on” storylines. Good actors but miscast, dodgy accents all round. Nobody to root for and stopped caring what happened to any of them. How can this be so bad when the other two series were so good. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Ishy W Truly a terrible show. So disappointing after 1883 which I loved. It is rare that I can't finish a series but this is boring nauseating and cheesy. Less of Africa would have made it better. Spencer and Alex... yuk , the worst kind of romance. It feels like they stretched out one episode into four. Poor judgement to release this rubbish. Not even the amazing Helen Mirren could save it sadly. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review Brian D 76%. 8/11/25. The opening of the season was a little corny - especially the African scnes. Made sense that they set the scene for Spencer's journey back to Yellowstone, but it felt out of place. The show started to pick up when he started the trip back home. Sort of similar with the storyline with the Indian girl feeling random and off-topic, but that also improved. Some very intense scenes with the Indian girl and just in general with this show. Really like the setting and Dutton's wife is badass. Season ended pretty strong. 3/5 rewatch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Glenda S Despite the stellar cast, the series stumbles when it comes to the most essential aspect: the script. A few well-known actors manage to hold the show together through sheer charisma and emotional depth. Their performances add gravity and credibility to scenes that might otherwise feel hollow. The costume and set design are rich and detailed. That said, the show leans far too heavily on shock value and violence to maintain attention. Gore and brutality often substitute for tension and plot development, which can be numbing rather than thrilling. It feels as though the creators are trying to mask narrative weakness with bloodshed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Kal-El M Absolutely riveting. Engrossing and the writing is amazing. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren SHINE along with the rest of the cast. Easy 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Frans B Taylor Sheridan intrigues again with his relentless style. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford shines brightly with their authentic performance. Whole cast excels in character. Beautifully written. Exceptional cinematography as always with this saga. Shocking, gritty, cruel, romantic and sometimes feeling very real. The best interpretation of the prohibition and depression era. Hard times portrayed in a life like manner. Very captivating story, visually stunning and emotionally expressive. Highly recommended Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
