What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bodkin's satire of true crime investigation could use a more compelling mystery to hang its quips on, but the series' sheer eccentricity makes for an intriguing enough tale from the old sod.

Drew Gregory Autostraddle It’s rare to get a mystery series this thematically astute — at least until the empty apolitical final moments — so it’s disappointing that the show can’t back up those ideas with high quality genre storytelling. Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe One of the big problems with “Bodkin” is that it hardly adds up to much. All of the investigation goes to some absurd places, and I don’t think that was intentional. And there are plot holes galore along the way. May 29, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday The elements don't quite congeal, but it's intriguing and well-crafted. Rated: 3/4 May 21, 2024 Full Review Mike Scott Times-Picayune It’s set in Ireland, so it’s fetchingly shot, but it also deftly finds an appealing balance between whimsy and macabre. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 14, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online Offbeat and eccentric, Bodkin is a first-class dark-comedy story and must-watch series for any dark comedy fans. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Eliza Janssen Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) Despite its compelling setting in a small Irish town and a premise that falsely pledges to deconstruct the shallow facade of redemptive true crime “justice”, the series ends up feeling overlong, inconsequential and repetitive. Frank I Dark comedy about an Irish cold case being investigated by three podcasters with very different motives stirring up trouble with the locals. Sounds good on paper. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Brian K Great series! Funny, keeps you guessing and you bond with the characters. Hoping for a season 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review liz R Dark, very dark, sharp, funny and at times poignant. Full of twists and turns and a dash of Irish folklore. What's not to like? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Dennis B There's a lot to like about Bodkin. The setting, story, twists, turns, characters, and tone. Not often, a cast can be so dynamic they transcend the irritating aspects of their characters. This cast does just that. Charlie Kemp steals every scene he is in, yet, Cullen, Cara, Forte, Walley, and Wilmont are wonderful in annoying an audience with their peculiarities. This binge-worthy. Make sure you have plenty of Guinness Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/25 Full Review Craig B Very entertaining mystery-thriller set in Ireland. Solid cast, quirky characters, and a well-paced story with plenty of twists all add to an enjoyable series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Ted C Silly, fun, melodramatic, the characters are enjoyably their flawed selves. Enjoyed how much of a role eels play in the plot. It did a decent job of the cool thing where we are peppered with imagery for the whole season, but don't find out why until the end. The relationship between being in a situation and documenting it, and podcasting as a medium, are explored. This crew has a different vibe from the true crime podcasts we are familiar with.
