What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bodkin's satire of true crime investigation could use a more compelling mystery to hang its quips on, but the series' sheer eccentricity makes for an intriguing enough tale from the old sod.

Drew Gregory Autostraddle It’s rare to get a mystery series this thematically astute — at least until the empty apolitical final moments — so it’s disappointing that the show can’t back up those ideas with high quality genre storytelling. Jun 18, 2024 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe One of the big problems with “Bodkin” is that it hardly adds up to much. All of the investigation goes to some absurd places, and I don’t think that was intentional. And there are plot holes galore along the way. May 29, 2024 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday The elements don't quite congeal, but it's intriguing and well-crafted. Rated: 3/4 May 21, 2024 Full Review Romey Norton Film Focus Online Offbeat and eccentric, Bodkin is a first-class dark-comedy story and must-watch series for any dark comedy fans. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Eliza Janssen Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) Despite its compelling setting in a small Irish town and a premise that falsely pledges to deconstruct the shallow facade of redemptive true crime “justice”, the series ends up feeling overlong, inconsequential and repetitive. May 29, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Fans of The Tourist and Only Murders in the Building should definitely check out this entertaining tale, which trades heavily on the juxtaposition of characters, both within the visiting trio and eclectic range of eccentric locals they encounter. Alex B Keeps you engaged and on the edge of the seat until the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Anne R The only reason I continued to watch this interminable train wreck was to see how it ended. Even the ending was muddled. From episode 1, this series was packed with cliched Irish culture and trite symbolism. The wolf? The occasional prism special effects? The "story line" felt like it had been written by a team of 20 or so isolated people, each with a different vision and focus. It was totally lacking in coherence. The characters were superficial caricatures of predictable types and they were badly acted at that. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Chris H Absolutely goes nowhere. Whole thing added up to nothing and complete rubbish. Forced myself to come back and finish it just to stick something on and will never get that time back. Think I only watched it as an Irishman to see if there were jokes in there for us but alas just terribly written, with actors to match. Genuinely annoyed I've actually watched this. 🤯 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Erin L So charming. Awesome characters and great story. Perfect Ireland setting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review Angelo P I realy like everything Will Forte is involved with. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Niki M Seeing that Barack and Michele Obama were executive producers, I was expecting something with a bit more heft. But this is a light-weight, completely forgettable dramedy that depends too heavily on Irish eccentricity for its charm. Repellent characters and a top-heavy plot leaves one wondering why one should care. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
