What to Know

Critics Consensus

Grounded by reliably terrific performances from Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, Dune: Prophecy lacks the spice of Denis Villeneuve's films but compensates with addictively perilous palace intrigue.

Even if you’re a Dune nerd, I bet it will be complicated. Needlessly so, some might say. Go to Full Review

On its own terms, Dune: Prophecy is a fine show. It’s filled with excellent performances, dank but compelling production design, and intriguing little twists and turns. But it feels hemmed in by its status as a prequel. Go to Full Review

But everywhere in “Prophecy,” one feels the merciless tractor-beam pull of franchise service. Go to Full Review

It's an impeccably-made show, featuring outstanding production design, costumes, visual effects, and more, but when it comes to the narrative itself, it's more of a mixed bag. Go to Full Review

The series clearly has “Game of Thrones” aspirations which in some ways hamper the early episodes. But it helps in other key ways, namely in its similar grand ambition that shines through in the storytelling, the terrific production design, and costumes. Go to Full Review

Sabiqul H @RT68318653 Apr 17 The main thing is the primary perspective of Dune: Prophecy is the Bene Gesserit. In the both movies, we see the Bene Gesserit are mysterious and often seem "evil" or at least cold. But by making them the protagonists of Prophecy, the show makes you to understand, why they became so manipulative. You see their fear, their sacrifices, and the genuine threats (like the return of Thinking Machines) that drive them to become the powerful organization we know in Paul's timeline, 10k years later. In movies, the Harkonnens are the villain. In Prophecy, we see the story through their eyes. They are a "shamed" house trying to rebuild their reputation, and Valya uses the Sisterhood to achieve that. Also this show explains the political fragility of the early Imperium. The series is very very good. I'm a major dune fan. Maybe for this, this show is fascinating to me. See more Braden S @TaxthisD Apr 16 What a waste of time. See more neonobil C @RT82287566 Apr 7 First, this is an adaptation from frank herbert son, who ruined the lore. Second it doesn't trust the audience, explaining like we are stupid. I love the Benne Geserit, but this show ruined it for me. I would rather watch a 6 hours long youtube video about dune lore. Great cgi, great acting bad stort line. They missed the point, the themes, they haven't read not one book, otherwise i don't understand See more Josh R @Joshlotto Mar 19 I love the Dune universe so much, so I'm an easy win, but the soundtrack playing over these scenes felt unoriginal and did the opposite of elevating the scenes. This, paired with the on-the-nose acting and what felt like lazy writing and character development, left me struggling to get into anything. I just didn't care, even though I wanted to so badly. The set designs and SFX were quite good, however, and I enjoyed the backstories a lot, particularly the scenes of the Butlerian Jihad. I suspect they will come back stronger if they do a season 2, I hope. See more Casey T @Opera Feb 23 Too much feminism in one story. Skip this series. See more Ryan h @RicardoWellingham Feb 19 They should have named it: The View: In Outer-Space. It’s not entertaining, enlightening or enjoyable in any way. See more Read all reviews
