Critics Consensus

Leveraging creator and star Natasha Rothwell's firecracker energy for a sweet and sour character study, How to Die Alone is a handy manual for relatable viewing.

Judy Berman TIME Magazine The White Lotus and Insecure star Natasha Rothwell created and starred in this frank, inspirational (but never saccharine) comedy about a repressed airport worker... Oct 1, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Repurposing your life is painfully difficult, especially with crushing financial debts, and Rothwell makes the push and pull apparent... It all makes for a highly promising series. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 27, 2024 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times The series should make a star of Natasha Rothwell, playing the likable but deeply flawed driver of a luggage cart. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Kristen Maldonado Pop Culture Planet Natasha Rothwell continues to prove how much of a superstar she is as both the creator and star in How To Die Alone. The comedy spans a unique range of satirical and surreal to more introspective and grounded moments that really work. Oct 3, 2024 Full Review Jen Maravegias Pajiba The show is caustically funny. Natasha Rothwell’s use of self-deprecating humor might not resonate with everyone, but it effectively creates the protective armor Melissa uses to shield herself from, well, everything. Audience Member Heart-warming, funny, cozy and all around real. From the story to the cast this show hooks your from episode 1. I can't get enough and I hope we get more of this wonderful show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Mrs P I thought that this had the makings of a watchable series but as it went on I changed my mind. I am no prude by any means but I found the explicit dialogue and actions quite revolting. A good series doesn't need tackily graphic scenarios. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Ash P After seeing the trailer, I was interested to see it, and certainly kept my expectations to a minimal that I've enjoyed it all. Has a good amount of heart along with how the acting goes to connect with characters, friends and family surrounding Mel. Plus, the humor really does get a good laugh out of me with only a few that doesn't work too much. As far as the story goes, it does work well as a sitcom when it comes to Mel interacting with her friends whether at work or talking about relationships whether it's familial love or having a love interest. Understanding that it was well placed in a JFK Terminal as it could happen anywhere else whether a business is small or big, as it was fun for not only the actors, but also for how the comedy is built. Not to be fair, without spoiling too much on the ending, I do often think it should end differently or it should be as is if you think back at how the first two episodes had built up when it came to Mel's actions. I could only guess that it's up to the audience to say it should be a better ending or it should've ended differently and maybe have another episode or two for a better ending of the series. But I digress. Can admit some parts does have that sort of troupe from other movies or series involving family drama or romantic comedies, but will also admit some of them were a warm moment when it came to Mel hanging out with her family during their Thanksgiving get-together and the time when Mel had to realize that sometimes you don't really need love to fulfill your life and just go on with it as the best as you could. There is an old saying that goes, "You only live once, so it's better to have fun with it all beforehand." Even as a working man, I can say I had a great time with this. If you're in a mood to watch an episode after a long day at work or if you're just looking to binge for some heart and laughter, I say this can be worth your time. 8/10. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Donna L Very funny and touching too. Mel is an every woman, so relatable. Enjoyed this show very much. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Koko P Brilliantly Done!!! Charming and Funny, each episode has you wanting more. Can't wait for season 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review micah c I quite enjoyed the first few episodes of this show. It had me laughing on the edge of my seat. I love the main character and how she takes over every scene she is in. The comedic timing is impeccable. I hope this isn’t a one off season and we get another one.
