      Critics Consensus

Pairing Idris Elba's terse echidna with a befuddled Adam Pally, Knuckles could use some extra punch to appeal more broadly beyond youngsters but hits just fine as light family entertainment.

Tony S The Knuckles series is the perfect definition of a mixed bag. The show manages to tell a simple story whilst keeping the main character from appearing for only an hour so hey, at least that is an achievement right? In all seriousness, this show was not it. Many of the choices in it baffled me to my core. How can a series about a sonic character not have the character for a certain amount of time? Limited budget? Ok, I can work with that. But how can your story fluctuate between good and garbage writing in a matter of seconds?! How can the entirety of the cast (other than Idris Elba's and Stockard Channing's roles) be devoid of any passion? How can a series based on the Sonic franchise be completely absent of any soundtrack references? Where are the references to Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic 3 the Saxophone solos and weird raps? Oh hey the gave us his hat....that's something. Last but not least, how can a series that follows after the second instalment of your SCU (or whatever Paramount calls it) not provide any meaningful baton passes for the next instalment? The "Knuckles" series isn't complete garbage but to call it anything better would also be too much. Sonic 1 had a tough job to and so, whilst it didn't take itself seriously, it at least told its story with genuine passion and seriousness behind it. Sonic 2 rode the high of the 1st movie's success a bit too much which led to it raising to the highest of highs from before yet plummeting to the lowest of lows. "Knuckles" has chosen to not only to not take itself seriously, it told its story in a makeshift theatre musical....literally. PERFECT SPIN-OFF SERIES!!!!!! <33333 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Dreadboi 1 Pretty decent show and gives Knuckles some good things to do before Sonic 3 and I think Wade Whipple has a good arc over the show. The villains weren’t there as much as they should have been and knuckles has some missing screen time sometimes but other than that this show was decent. I liked it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Kinda mixed on it. Episodes 1 - 4 didn’t feel too out of place from the Sonic Movie Universe when compared to the first film, however 5 and 6 felt rushed and the main problem with 4 overstayed its welcome. They end the show when all the main bad guys were (rather quickly) defeated and the b-plot is wrapped up, but the supposed main plot doesn’t feel complete with much to be desired. All the scenes with Knuckles feel perfectly in character and are a joy to watch, especially the action, but it’s almost entirely gone from the second half with the focus shifting to Wade. I feel the show could’ve worked with this plot if it was either a direct to streaming movie, a few episodes longer to build more setups and conclusions, or at the very least the already existing show get an Episode 7 as an epilogue. The show feels like a big parody of the last two movies (mainly the first one), kinda like how Sonic Boom is a parody of the Sonic franchise's state in real life at the time or something like that. However while Sonic Boom didn't take itself seriously either, it wasn't really trying to tell a story, Knuckles was, and it only leaves a rushed conclusion for the b-plot. 6.5/10, enjoyable to watch when you know what to expect. Very likely not at all required to watch Sonic 3 but does have a few blink and you miss it lore implications. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Definitely a huge W for the Sonic fans. Knuckles is a great limited series that has many moments that satisfy fans, but it still has some flaws. I don't mind watching the humans like Wade having some character development, but come one this is the "Knuckles" series. Anyway, still a pretty solid series. 8/10. Nicola Austin Empire Magazine This is more ‘Wade’s World’ than ‘Sonic 2.5’. Still, Knuckles’ solo side-quest proves fun filler fluff as fans await the arrival of Shadow in the threequel. Rated: 3/5 Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Leila Latif Guardian Ludicrous, hilarious and actually rather moving Rated: 4/5 Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Sarah Bea Milner Inverse There’s a comforting familiarity to the family-friendly clowning, pratfalls, and visual gags, but that nostalgic comfort comes at the cost of establishing its own clear identity: Knuckles is, at times, derivative. Apr 29, 2024 Full Review Andre Meadows Black Nerd Comedy Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show. I had a good time with the show, but 11:46 I definitely see the parts [where I felt] this is really not necessary a show called "Knuckles." May 3, 2024 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network Kids will be disappointed, and adults will be bored. It is a shame because I laughed at multiple moments that will stick with me that did not overcome the lackluster project as a whole. Rated: 6/10 May 3, 2024 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation This fish-out-of-water plot often allows Elba to nail that serious delivery in a hilarious way. The issue is that it eventually turns into a “Wade” story with Knuckles as more of a sidekick, and that inevitably makes the show far less interesting.
