Johnny Loftus Decider Painting With John is part philosophy trip, part left field comedy, part visual and artistic sensation, and part transmission from a perpetually restless creative soul. Jun 5, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Pat E John's real approach to this documentary style absurdist comedy, musically compelling, meditative something of an art show is totally unique. I haven't seen anything like it to compare it to since Monty Python, and no! It's nothing like that, but it is something completely different…. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/01/23 Full Review Roger A If ideas were allowed to meander freely -then they would go here and John would keep them company Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/23 Full Review Bryon P Loved Fishing With John years ago, but I might like Painting With John even more. John Lurie is underrated, The Lounge Lizards are underrated, and hell -- I even love the paintings. I wish the seasons were longer -- each episode is like meditation for me. I could use more of that! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/23 Full Review Susan J Aaargh...season 3 started out 5 and now 3.5. The inevitable happened. He became self-conscious. Now knows and cares about "the audience" and social media. Now "trying" to be funny, odd...trying to fanciful, trying to act like the curmudgeonly old dude. It doesn't suck but before these were sollioquies he made for himself and now he's performing. This is what I wrote after Episode 1. I don't quite feel this way anymore. "He is so smart. So funny. So human, creative, and most of all original--it's so freeing to watch it. I could seriously watch him paint to his music for an hour but really appreciate all the interludes. I've thought about reaching out to John Lurie and thanking him for this, but he's just the sort of person and performer who makes everyone feel like doing that because he's so seemingly honest and vulnerable and intimate--and he's probably in actuality a grump and would be irritated by any contact. I have friends like him. Maybe I love this show so much because I'm from NY and I can just feel the scene he was part of, and people he would have been collaborating and hanging with, and know that deal in my bones and welcome it...or maybe he's just super appealing. Or maybe it's how unusually well-written and interesting it is. Originality and pure creativity of John Lurie's has always hit the spot for me, and been a boost....makes me, as he says in Episode 1 of Season 3, be, like, 'ok, I'll come back a little bit on the humans and I'll give them another chance.' Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/23 Full Review Sam B Clever, melancholic, philosophical, and void of all cliches. This is a masterpiece of unique set of sight and sounds!
