Brightened up by Rashida Jones' sly comedic timing, Sunny is a melancholy sci-fi series that positively glows.

David Opie Empire Magazine Rashida Jones gives a career-best performance in this strange yet moving series that pushes back against the algorithm by pulling us to and fro in surprising, unpredictable ways. Rated: 4/5 Jul 16, 2024 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine If viewers come back for Season 2, it will be thanks to the characters, not the cliffhangers. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle Sunny feels less like a warning of the dangers of AI and more like another effort to normalize it. As a grief drama and character study, it’s thrilling. As a tech dystopia, it’s murky. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Tara Ariano Cracked I definitely was not expecting that (a) one of the world’s biggest computer companies has brought us such a prickly, unsettling vision of our possible future living with A.I., and (b) that Apple has made a new comedy that isn’t allergic to conflict. Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Tynan Yanaga Film Inquiry Our globalized world is becoming increasingly complex and Sunny has such a striking, even unprecedented, opportunity to tackle this growing reality. It gets part of the way there before reverting to genre mechanisms that feel mostly standard issue. Aug 26, 2024 Full Review Nicola Austin Radio Times Part sci-fi, part corporate mystery, part dark comedy and much more besides, this gripping watch has a big ‘ole beating heart at its centre – and it’s all the better for it. Suzie M Sunny is a charming robot paired with a woman dealing with a tragedy. However, the woman also teams up with a girl who likes her because the script says so, despite the fact that the woman doesn't treat her very well. It really feels like it's the main character's quest and the others are just along for the ride. As more secrets are revealed the series gets less and less interesting and more and more boring and the dialogue gets more cringe as we go along. It's a 10 episode series and there are whole episodes that are just filler... Do not recommend. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Tom F On paper I had moderately high hopes for this and it had many good elements, but like about half of the series on Apple it was poorly paced and never came together in an interesting way. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Lavinia C One of the best shows at the end of 2024, if you like Asian culture (Japanese specifically), technology, intrigue... I've just started watching it again. I can forgive a few stumbles in dialogue particularly from Rashinda Jones' character. But on the whole... intriguing, thought-provoking. Waiting for Season 2. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Paul H Really adorable series, heartwarming, funny, stylish. As usual Nora Jones is brilliant. Also really enjoyed Anny the clumsy. The pair of them really clicked. Gonna miss you silly robot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Claire G I adored this. I fell completely in love with Masa. I loved how odd Suzie seemed and how the love story between her and Masa gradually made more and more sense as we found out more about him. Mixxy, Noriko and Sunny are great characters, too. I enjoyed the gentle thread that runs through the story, that you can never really know everything about another person and yet you can love them and need them in your life. There are a lot of subtle and intricate threads running through this series that play out gently beneath the much more obvious drama. I am not sure I loved the Yakuza parts as much as the rest, but they provided plot, challenge and contrast to the more nuanced main characters. And the whole series felt original and stylish and quirky. I would love to spend more time in this fascinating world, with the main quartet of characters and hopefully somehow with the gentle and enigmatic Masa. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Erika M Inject this show right into my veins and give the writers a raise. I need season 2 IMMEDIATELY.
