Critics Consensus

Brightened up by Rashida Jones' sly comedic timing, Sunny is a melancholy sci-fi series that positively glows.

David Opie Empire Magazine Rashida Jones gives a career-best performance in this strange yet moving series that pushes back against the algorithm by pulling us to and fro in surprising, unpredictable ways. Rated: 4/5 Jul 16, 2024 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine If viewers come back for Season 2, it will be thanks to the characters, not the cliffhangers. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle Sunny feels less like a warning of the dangers of AI and more like another effort to normalize it. As a grief drama and character study, it’s thrilling. As a tech dystopia, it’s murky. Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Tara Ariano Cracked I definitely was not expecting that (a) one of the world’s biggest computer companies has brought us such a prickly, unsettling vision of our possible future living with A.I., and (b) that Apple has made a new comedy that isn’t allergic to conflict. Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Tynan Yanaga Film Inquiry Our globalized world is becoming increasingly complex and Sunny has such a striking, even unprecedented, opportunity to tackle this growing reality. It gets part of the way there before reverting to genre mechanisms that feel mostly standard issue. Aug 26, 2024 Full Review Nicola Austin Radio Times Part sci-fi, part corporate mystery, part dark comedy and much more besides, this gripping watch has a big ‘ole beating heart at its centre – and it’s all the better for it. Erika M Inject this show right into my veins and give the writers a raise. I need season 2 IMMEDIATELY. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review fred b nope, not waiting for season 2. season 1 was 10 episodes with no resolution, other than a setup for season 2. when the premise for season 1 is only a setup for season 2, streaming services need to offer a warning, something like, "please be aware this season is merely a setup for season 2, offering no resolution to the conflict and no guarantee a season 2 will even be forthcoming". why did i even waste my time. i don't mind a season that sets up for a season 2, as long as it's a new story line and season 1 is wrapped up. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review David T This was a complete waste of time. I wish I could get those hours back. I tried to be open minded going into every episode and thinking it would eventually get better but sadly it did not. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Rod B I love this weird-ass little show :) I feel like I need to rewatch the final few episodes just to make sure I understood everything but overall, the vibe and energy of the show, it’s almost like it gives me a feeling of warm nostalgia, mixed with a tinge of creepiness while watching it. I hope it gets enough views for a season 2. …if the show runners have more story to tell. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Ellie R Literally LOVED this show, was totally gripped and didn't want it to end... And the ending : WHAT. I need to know what happens next (without spoiling it for everyone!). The stomach churns, emotional kicks and hits and mind tricks are only a part of the brilliance of this show. Also loved to see a whole US series against a backdrop of a city and country we rarely (or ever?) see. It's visually a treat, the actors also are all WONDERFUL and the constant surprises in the story kept me muchly addicted. Please give us more! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review Harriet A Loved this show, really hope it gets a second season <3 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
