Critics Consensus

Brightened up by Rashida Jones' sly comedic timing, Sunny is a melancholy sci-fi series that positively glows.

Rashida Jones gives a career-best performance in this strange yet moving series that pushes back against the algorithm by pulling us to and fro in surprising, unpredictable ways. Go to Full Review

If viewers come back for Season 2, it will be thanks to the characters, not the cliffhangers. Go to Full Review

Sunny feels less like a warning of the dangers of AI and more like another effort to normalize it. As a grief drama and character study, it’s thrilling. As a tech dystopia, it’s murky. Go to Full Review

Sunny is a series that, more than for its plot, stands out for its humour and its exploration of loneliness and the relationship between humans and machines. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

I definitely was not expecting that (a) one of the world’s biggest computer companies has brought us such a prickly, unsettling vision of our possible future living with A.I., and (b) that Apple has made a new comedy that isn’t allergic to conflict. Go to Full Review

Our globalized world is becoming increasingly complex and Sunny has such a striking, even unprecedented, opportunity to tackle this growing reality. It gets part of the way there before reverting to genre mechanisms that feel mostly standard issue. Go to Full Review

melissa l Aug 20 Watched the first two episodes and was not only bored with the storyline but also irritated by the juvenile dialogue. Would not recommend to anyone with a brain stem. See more Clay D. @SmokeyD17 Jul 16 Canceling a TV show with a cliffhanger of her friend stealing the robot and not knowing where it is it’s probably one of the lowest blows you could do of canceling a series. See more Rachel M @rmac81 Jun 21 This could have been good, and it was at times. But the plot seemed haphazard. I also didn’t find any of the lead characters likable, so it limited my emotional investment. See more David C May 29 This show isn’t well written. Another fine example of plot points joined together with “and then” instead of “therefore”. The show tried to delve into some Sci Fi troupes, but it’s implemented as shallow as the true intention of this show. A better example of Sci Fi troupes being implemented in to an urban setting was They Cloned Tyrone. That movie builds better stakes and meaningful interactions in 25 minutes than this show does in 4 hours. The show offers no stakes. The writers aren’t talented enough to let their villain do more than give off a slightly unsettling vibe which leads to extremely underwhelming “pay-offs”. It tries INCREDIBLY HARD to be quirky and authentic. It refuses to let it’s villains berate. The writers forgot the first rule of authenticity. Being bold and taking risks. After I came to that conclusion, I stoped watching. I refuse to continue to watch a show that refuses to take itself seriously within the tone it sets for itself. This show is sterilized and safe to appeal to the largest audience possible. It follows the corporate sellout cookie cutter format. Which is highly contrasted when the show tries soooooo hard to be awkward. The food has no flavour here. P.S. Why is the CGI quality for the robot fights like something out of a 1997 Mortal Kombat type movie? Just lazy. See more Cristian s @cristiansj May 6 Demasiado rancia. See more Bill G @1234554321 Apr 15 SLOW and BORING…waste of time! Main character was written as an idiot. The pacing is so bad and doesn’t go anywhere. It’s worse than a chick flick. Who spent money for this? Who invested in this? Was this part of some money laundering scam? Seriously, 1/2 star is too much for this steaming pile of dog mess. 90% rotten tomatoes score??! Really?! This was stupid!!! See more Read all reviews
