Critics Consensus

Though at times formulaic and sentimental, Jane Austen Book Club succeeds on the strength of its likable ensemble cast. Even those not familiar with Jane Austen's work may find much to enjoy this lighthearted romance.

The Jane Austen Book Club, based on Karen Joy Fowler's bestseller, offers a distinctive vision of hell - a plane of being where there are only six novels that matter, and they're consulted like all-purpose agony aunts. Go to Full Review

This is a rom-com that tries to be sassy and true but ends up ridiculously unlike any kind of reality at all. Go to Full Review

Despite the movie's cramming romantic mishaps down our gullets like the pilot episode of a mini-series...viewing the discontents of the post-feminist generation through the prism of Austen's rulebook starts to produce its share of entertaining moments... Go to Full Review

Meryl V @RT07617579 5d Such an easy watch. Love it. Ive probably watched it 10 times See more Kalissa H. @kali_416 Feb 7 Cute and I liked the ending. I didn’t like the dating the student storyline though. Grigg was a great character! See more donnie m @RT64375194 03/11/2024 horrible acting by some 'usually' good actors-this could have been a lot better See more 12/14/2021 Having a "Jane Austen Book Club" with all the participants struggling with a situation from one of Jane's books should be an absolute winner. Sadly such was not the case. Watching "The Jane Austen Book Club" was rather more reminiscent of "Sex in the City". The feeling of the hovering hand of a scripting committee was present for the entire movie. It is exactly why films made by totalitarian states are so unwatchable. Too much worrying about the audience and too little thought of the authenticity of the story. See more 08/30/2020 One instance that the movie is BETTER than the book! Adorably cute - the actors did a great job bringing this to like! See more steve d @RT35616104 06/24/2020 I know Jane Austen... this is no Jane Austen. A deeply unpleasant experience.
